Math News

We have had another great week multiplying 1-digit numbers by 2-, 3-, and 4-digit numbers.  Students are working very hard to master the different strategies and are finding out which one is their favorite.  Please continue to encourage them to learn their basic multiplication facts. This will help tremendously as we move to 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication next week.

The next two weeks, we will be completing topics 7 and 8 in the textbook.  However, to make it a little more fun, we will add a little holiday spin to our work.  Students will be given a Holiday Multiplication checklist that looks like a game board on Monday.  They will go around the game board throughout the two weeks completing the activities. Some of the activities include a snowball fight, color by number multiplication, and a bonus activity with multiple activities on planning a trip to Grandma’s for the holidays.  I will be working with small groups on hands on activities to learn multiplication and assisting any that need help. Please encourage your child to keep pace with the activities.  They should be able to complete the required work within the two weeks and we will hopefully test before the break.  If we don’t do a formal test before the break, there are 2 graded assignments worked into the checklist that will count in the gradebook.

Reminder:  Study Island Assignment #6 is due next Friday.  Several students have not done any lessons on this assignment and it was assigned 2 weeks ago.  Please encourage your child to complete these lessons so that they can participate and complete their game board next week.  Math stations booklets are also due Tuesday, December 18th. Students have been working on these for 2 weeks and several have turned them in already.

There will be no homework packet next week so that students can work on their holiday checklist instead.

Please continue to encourage your child to complete their ALEKS topics each week.  This is a great way to get up to 10 extra credit points each week.

Science News

Moon calendars are due next week on Thursday.  Students should have been observing the moon for the last 3 weeks--one more to go.

This week we talked about why the Earth has day and night.  Ask your student what they learned about rotation and see if they can explain day and night to you.  They also could probably tell you how old they would be if they lived on Mercury. (It’s about 7 times their age right now.)

Next week we will talk about shadows and move onto seasons.

READING LOGS
Reading logs are assigned every week. Students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes and then respond to their reading using the question bank provided in their binder for fiction and nonfiction books. Your child is only required to answer one question a night on the reading response sheet provided. Please check weekly - if not every night - to make sure that your child is completing this task.  I will now be grading the logs based on the actual quality of the responses. Students will still receive a grade of 100 at the beginning of the quarter - but I will take off 1 point for every day that is not completed thoroughly. If the log is not submitted on Friday, students will lose 5 points from overall grade. If you have any further questions about the reading log, please do not hesitate to email or send a message via Class Dojo.

NO READING LOG NEXT WEEK

READING/WRITING - Text Dependent Analysis
This week we concluded our unit on Folktales and Theme with the popular Brothers Grimm story, “The Fisherman and His Wife”. Over the course of two weeks, we read this more complex text multiple times for different purposes as we learned to analyze in order to respond to a text-dependent analysis. We discussed the components of an essay - introduction, body (or development as it is referred to on the SC Ready Writing rubric), and conclusion - and worked diligently on composing our piece - students answered the following focus question “Why does the sea change colors throughout the story?” Students learned about different ways to hook readers - asking a question, painting and picture in the reader's’ head, and using quotes/figurative language. We talked about the importance of organizing thoughts before writing and completing a graphic organizer. Students will finish the final parts of their essays next week and add conclusions. I am hoping that will get to do some creative projects - like watercolor paintings so students can paint what they see - just as it is described in the text!

Social Studies News
This week, students learned about The Columbian Exchange - the exchange of plants, animals, diseases, and new ways of life between the New and Old World (Eastern and Western Hemispheres). Students were expected to by the end of the week summarize the Columbian Exchange and again were required to label a map of Earth’s continents - this time, the four major continents involved in this exchange - North and South America, Europe and Africa and the items that were shared between them. In the coming weeks, we will learn about Early Settlements and Colonization in the New World.

Math News

We have worked really hard this week learning many different strategies to help with multi-digit multiplication.  We have multiplied 2-, 3-, and 4-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. Ask your child what their favorite strategy is and see if they can show you how to multiply.  We will take the Topic 6 test next Friday, december 7th.

Please continue to encourage your child to complete their ALEKS topics each week.  This is a great way to get up to 10 extra credit points each week.

Science News

We have been observing the moon for the last couple of weeks.  Students were given their moon log on Wednesday, November 14th.  I have also included it in Google classroom with the link to see the moon if it is cloudy or not out when students go to bed.  They are required to observe the moon each night for 28 days so that they may see the moon make one complete cycle. Please remind them to do this everyday and not wait until the last week to just copy them off of the internet.  They will learn so much more if they go out searching each night or morning for the moon. It is a great activity for families to take some time and look at all the amazing things in the night sky. They should have seen the moon go from full moon and how it starts to get smaller now.  By the middle of next week, it will be a New Moon and students will not see the moon at all for a couple of nights.

This week we have researched astronomy tools that help in navigation.  Students defined the instrument, found a picture of it, and told of its importance in navigation.  They even wrote a letter to the editor (in their journals) that was to give the editor great reasons why these instruments are so important in navigation and why we should continue learning of them in school.

Next week we will move onto the Earth’s rotation and how it causes day and night.  We will also start discussing shadows in relation to the sun.

Math News

We have worked very hard this week converting metric and customary units.  We have added a lot of references to our math journals so that students can use them when working on ALEKS, homework, or even in class.  We will take a test on Tuesday to show what we know. Math Stations and Study Island Assignment #5 are also due by Tuesday. Students have had several weeks to work on these so they should be about done.

When we come back from Thanksgiving break, we will continue on to Topic 6 in our math textbook on multiplying by multi-digit numbers.  We will be learning different strategies to help us. Knowing our basic facts is the number one thing students can do to prepare for this unit.  If they know their basic facts, they will be much more successful.

I will combine next week’s ALEKS topics with November 26th-December 2nd topics.  Students can get a maximum of 20 topics for this combined week. They must do at least 7 topics.

No Math Homework Packet next week!
Science News

We have had a lot of fun learning about the planets in our Solar System this week.  The class Google slide presentation is linked below so that you can see all of the hard work.  We also came up with our own mnemonic devices to remember the order of the planets. These will be in Seesaw very soon--if you don’t already see them.

READING
This week students finished the fables they created on their own in their small groups. They put their finished stories in Google Slides and added artwork - either illustrated work that they drew themselves or clipart (some even created their own clipart using shapes!) After creating the Slides presentation they recorded voice overs in Screencastify! Many of the projects came out great!!! Here are a few examples,

Upon returning from Thanksgiving Break, we will conclude our unit on Folktales and Theme with a popular Brothers Grimm story, “The Fisherman and His Wife”. We will review previous lessons learned from literature we’ve already read and then read this more complex text multiple times for different purposes as we learn to analyze in order to respond to a text-dependent analysis. The theme is the lesson or message that the writer wants to get across in his or her story that can be applied to our everyday life - we call it THE MEssage (think about how it can be applied to me). I suggest (if they can) that as you’re home or traveling for the holidays, have your child continue to read - particularly a fictional piece and see if they can point out the theme!

Social Studies News
Upon returning from break, students will review the reasons for exploration - political, economic, and technological factors and review must know information about the European explorers Leif Eriksson, Columbus, Hernando de Soto, Magellan, Henry Hudson, John Cabot, and La Salle. An explorer note page with an overview of each explorer will be provided next week Tuesday for students to study over the course of the break. A labeled map of specific countries in Europe will be in their Social Studies Journal.

Next week Monday and Tuesday, students will finish presenting European Explorer Research Projects. The actual document with the expectations was emailed to all parents - and the project was expected to be completed in Sutori.

Pajama Day
We are having Pajama Day on Monday, November 19th.  The students earned this as a school-wide incentive for earning PAWS each day for our best behavior.  Children are allowed to wear modest pajamas to school. No bedroom slippers, however, because we will go outside and some may participate in PE.

Donuts for Dads
Donuts for Dads is Tuesday, November 20th @ 8am.  We hope that many dads can make it out and enjoy a little treat.

Math News

This week we took the topic 5 test and moved onto a unit on measurement conversions.  We will be converting metric and customary units of weight, length, and capacity. Students are encouraged to keep their classwork papers together in their folder so they may have these to study with for the next test.  We will take a test on measurement conversions the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break so that we can come back after Thanksgiving and begin a new unit on multiplying.

Please  have your students complete at least 5 ALEKS topics each week.  I am allowing them to get a maximum of 10 bonus points each week.  This means that they can do 15 topics a week and receive their 5 points for a 100% and then 10 points for extra credit.

Science News

Now that one nine weeks is under our belt, I’m hoping that students understand the requirements for their journals.  We will continue with our interactive journals and students will need to make sure they are keeping up to date. I always give time in class to work on these activities.  If students do not finish, it is their responsibility to take the journal home and finish. Last nine weeks, many students did not finish work and therefore their journal grades were not what they could have been.  I gave students a grading sheet the Wednesday and Thursday before the weekend so that they knew what would be required. This was in their google classroom. I will continue to keep the table of contents updated in google classroom throughout the next unit also.

We began our space unit this week.  We have been researching the planets in small groups.  Groups were to have their slide ready for presentation by the end of class today.  We will present on Monday and take a planet walk shortly after so that students can see the relative distance between the planets.  The class Google slide show will be posted in Seesaw and on the blog when they are complete.

We will also start a Moon log on Wednesday of next week.  Students will be required to observe the moon each night for 28 days so that they may see the moon make one complete cycle.  I will provide a website that has a calendar in case you don’t get a chance to see the moon so that students can still record their observations.

READING
Next week, we will continue to focus our attention on Theme and Folktales as students continue to read literature and write their own fables. The theme is the lesson or message that the writer wants to get across in his or her story that can be applied to our everyday life - we call it THE MEssage (think about how it can be applied to me). As a class, we will read one of my favorites to do with students - “The Fisherman and His Wife” (they love this story). Students will also take an assessment on “Ranita, The Frog Princess” which will also include questions about plurals (students have a plurals rule chart in binders).

Social Studies News
Beginning last week students began learning about the reasons for exploration. Social Studies indicator 4-1.3 says that students will need to be able to explain the political, economic, and technological factors that led to the exploration of the new world by Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, and England, including the competition between nations, the expansion of international trade, and the technological advances in shipbuilding and navigation. Students labeled on a map the named countries in Europe (hence the reason why it was and still is important for them to know where their continents are) and have in their Social Studies Journal.

Next week, students will begin working on European Explorer Research Projects. The actual document with the expectations will be sent home with students on Monday - as well as emailed to all parents. Students will choose one explorer to research and will complete presentation in Sutori (a highly versatile web program centered on project-based learning that allows students to create interactive presentations to share content and stories. Each student can easily login with Gmail accounts). The indicator this project will address is 4-1.4: Summarize the accomplishments of the Vikings and the Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French explorers, including Leif Eriksson, Columbus, Hernando de Soto, Magellan, Henry Hudson, John Cabot, and La Salle. (Explorers students can choose from listed in indicator).

  • My suggestion would be to go and find books from public library on the explorer of choice! Some books will be available from school library but not everyone will have access to them as there will only be a limited amount. Class will go to the library together as a whole on Tuesday, November 13th to learn about researching and accessing material that is appropriate/credible.

Math News

We have been working hard this week multiplying multi-digit numbers by one-digit numbers.  We will take the topic 5 test on Wednesday, November 7th. This will be after we are off for Election day, but students will have all the tools to study with and should use that extra time to review for the test.

Please continue to have your child practice their multiplication facts.  It is necessary for them to know their facts in order to continue multiplying larger problems.  Multiplication.com is a fun website that has all kinds of games that will help. Also a deck of cards is great for practicing facts as well.

Don’t forget to check out the Google Classroom “live” calendar.  It is up to date with all tests and/or assignments. Just in case you’re having trouble getting into Google classroom, try this link to see the calendar.

Please  have your students complete at least 5 ALEKS topics each week.  If your child forgets their ALEKS username and password, please let me know.  It is taped in their math journal, but I can look it up and send it by email to you so you can have it too.  I am allowing them to get a maximum of 10 bonus points each week.  This means that they can do 15 topics a week and receive their 5 points for a 100% and then 10 points for extra credit.

We have ended our Weather Unit.  Monday we will start our next unit on Space.  I will collect Science journals on Monday to grade for all of the weather content.  I have uploaded into Google classroom a sheet with what I will grade in the journal.  I encourage all students to make sure their journal is ready to turn in Monday. The sheet is also linked here for your easy access to see what is needed for the journal.
