Math and Science News
I can’t believe we only have one more week of school to go! We have had a great week working on our zoo project. Students presented their zoos to the class and I was very impressed with their creativity. They did a great job coming up with items to sell at their concessions stands and gift shops. They also designed t-shirts to sell as well as billboards and advertisements to let people know about their new zoo in town.

We also worked on some logic problems using our math skills and started our ABC book of math and science. Students will finish these next week and bring them home as a souvenir of 4th grade.

Math and Science News
This week we have furthered our math skills with some multiplication competitions. We have also been working on a project that combines math and science. Students broke into groups and are designing a zoo. They are using information given to them to decide how big each habitat needs to be to accommodate at least 2 animals of each species. They need at least 10 different animal species in their zoo along with a few bonus things (restroom, splash pad, concession stand, gift shop, etc.). Students are also taking into consideration the accommodations of each type of animal’s habitat, plants they may need, and controlled climates.

Next week we will further their zoo by designing an advertisement for their zoo, designing t-shirts to sell at the gift shop, and/or designing a commercial for their zoo. I hope they will enjoy this fun adventure using their math and science skills.

Math News

We took our SC Ready Math test yesterday. I know that everyone did their personal best and I am very proud of all of their hard work. They have been working out practice problems and really using Study Island to review all of the content.

Next week we will do some “Step Up to Fifth Grade” activities in our workbook to give them a taste of 5th grade. We will also do some fun projects and activities over the next couple of weeks. There will be no more homework this year, but students will still be encouraged to work on ALEKS. Students will have access to their ALEKS accounts all summer long, so please have them log in every once in a while so they can keep their minds sharp with math skills.

Science News

We had some great, creative instruments shared with us this week. I am very proud of how everyone stepped up and brought their instruments. We even played a song together and had a great time!

Tuesday is our SCPASS Science test. We will be reviewing on Monday all of our science topics this year. I have encouraged students to go and review the Science topics in Study Island so they can be exposed to many sample problems. After testing is complete next week, we will be doing some fun experiments and activities in class to dive further into our content. We may even have a Fear Factor type of activity--just some fun things to help them love science a little more.

Math News

We have reviewed this entire week. Students have been exposed to every type of problem that might be on the SCReady test. We have looked at previous year test items and have discussed methods to work out these problems. I am very proud of all of the hard work students have put forth this week and all year long!

Study Island is still important! Study Island is a great resource to review over the next few days. Students can choose what topic they are needing extra help with and do some extra practice problems. There will be no homework next week as I would love students to get extra rest each night before the test.

Science News

We had lots of fun this week with sound explorations. Students have been asked to make a musical instrument and bring it in on Monday to share with the class. The instrument can be very simple--please don’t go out and buy materials. Students have been encouraged to use materials from home. I will be grading the instrument on 2 things--can it change pitch and can it change volume.

Math News
We finished topic 13 this week and took our topic test. We have started our review for SC Ready. We started with measurement. Have your child help with measuring around the house. We talked about customary measurement today and we will review our metric system on Monday. Each day next week we will work on a different topic with some Study Island, games, worksheets, and other materials to try and make it fun while remembering all of the things we have studied this year.

Study Island is crucial at this point. Students are working on Study Island lessons during RTI time instead of ALEKS for the next couple of weeks. This means that there will be 2 assignments each week. Students will need to work efficiently on these assignments. I have found in the past that students wait until the last day to work on them. Please encourage your child to start on day 1 of the assignment so that they don’t fall behind. Next week students will have assignments #17 and #18 (which is a post test with a little of everything on it).
If students finish their Study Island lessons, they can do ALEKS for extra credit. Until testing is complete, ALEKS will be for extra credit. I will only give 10 points per week so if they do more than 10, I will only put a 10 in the gradebook. If they don’t do any ALEKS it won’t count against them for those few weeks.

Please, please, please have students working on Study Island over the next two weeks. It can only help them review and do better on any testing.

We started talking about sounds today. We did several investigations with sound. Ask your child what kinds of things they did this week. They should be able to tell you that sound is caused by vibrations and must have a medium to move through in order for us to hear them. We also started talking about the difference in pitch and volume and will continue with pitch and volume next week.

We took a Quizizz quiz this week. Students were able to take it up to 2 times and the best score was recorded in the gradebook. We reviewed right before taking it in hopes of helping them remember what was discussed about light. I will be giving some more classwork grades in the next 2 weeks. Some of them might be Quizizz or Quizlet activities that will be done on their chromebooks.
