Math News

We have finished our decimal unit and will now focus on reviewing all of the standards we have covered in 4th grade math.  Each day we will address a couple of standards so that we are ready for SC Ready Testing.  Please continue to encourage your child to complete homework because it is a review of 4th grade that will prepare them for standardized testing.  (Dates are below in the Fourth Grade News section).

ALEKS can be worked on at home.  ALEKS topics are being graded again.  Students should be completing a minimum of 10 topics a week.  I am trying to get them ready for 5th grade this last nine weeks.  In 5th grade, they will be required to master 10 topics a week as part of their grade.

Science News

This week we started our light and sound unit.  We are focusing on Chapter 1, lessons 1 and 2.  These lessons discuss the properties of light and the visible spectrum.  We had fun playing with the prisms and being able to see light breaking apart into the rainbow.  We will have some type of assessment next week.  It will be open book on lessons 1 and 2 and the vocabulary from those lessons.

Congratulations to Sean, Will, and Devin for their conservation posters. See the post with details by clicking here.

Language Arts News.

This week students have been working on writing fictional stories.  It is a process.  They have made story maps, rough drafts, and proofread each other’s work to this point.  Next week, we will be polishing our writings and making final copies.
We have also been working on the main idea, supporting details and finding important facts in short passages of writing.
Please encourage your child to read for 20+ minutes everyday and also to complete homework assigned each day.

Social Studies News

We have been working this week on Unit 7, chapters 1 and 2.  We are working on the Westward Expansion.  We will continue to work on Unit 7 for the next two weeks.  Please encourage your child to read their books at home and study each lesson as we go.  Thank you!

Journey Picture packages came home today.  These are packages that chronicle the growth of your child through the school years.  If your child has been here for 3 or more years, you will see all pictures.  If your child has been here less than 3 years, there are some special “Fun Variety” pictures you can choose to purchase.  If you want to purchase, please return payment by May 12th.  If you do not wish to purchase any of the pictures, please return as soon as possible.  Also, if you still have the Spring Pictures at home somewhere, you can return them along with this new package.

Minis for Moms will be on Friday, May 5th at 8am.  There will be Chick-fil-A chicken minis served.

We finished up our animal unit this week!  Next week we will begin discussing Light and Sound, which is chapter 1 in the textbook.

Language Arts News.

Students have been working on writing “Masterful” sentences.  These are sentences that have adjectives and adverbs, descriptive words and others that make sentences more informative and easy to read. We have also been working on Homonyms and Author’s perspective.  Students read a short story entitled, “Mouse and Crow” this week. They learned what personification is and also repetition.  We will review these early next week and move on to more skills as we try to review and learn as much as we can in our last few weeks!
Please encourage your child to read for 20+ minutes everyday and also to complete homework assigned each day.

Social Studies News

We have completed our unit of study on our six important Founding Fathers or leaders of early America.  Students have done very well.  Next week we will move on the the “Westward Expansion” and then the Civil War!  :)  Again, please encourage your child to complete any work sent home for homework.  Assignments are supposed to be written in their agendas daily and team leaders check this daily.  Thanks!  We are in need on paper and colored pencils to finish out the school year.  Please send some if you can!  Thank you!

Math News

We took our Objective 1 and 2 test this week.  When we return from Spring Break, we will continue working on objectives 3 and 4 on our checklist.  This will finish our decimal unit.  We will even discuss some money problems.  Please continue to encourage students to complete homework so that they have a spiral review of all of the 4th grade materials.

I was very happy to mail off a good many conservation posters this week.  Maybe one of our students will win!

We discussed inherited traits this week.  We also were surprised on Tuesday morning when we walked in to 3 baby chicks!  We have named them Brownie, Lucky, and Alex.  Pictures are on the blog.

We will finish our animal unit shortly after spring break and move onto Light and Sound to finish up the year.  A final test on animals will be given.  The date will be told to students closer to the test.  A study guide will also come home.

Language Arts News.

Happy Spring Break from Mrs. Browne!!!  This week we worked on a special writing about Spring.  Students did not have any spelling words this week because of the “short” week.  We took a test on My Brothers’ Flying Machine.  They will be passed back after Spring Break along with many other assignments that have been graded.  We enjoyed the book parade this week and both classes did a great job representing our team.
Some students have not completed their final copies of “Spring” and can do so over the holiday and email it to me.  dbrowne@richland2.org.  Also, there are a few students who still need to complete some way overdue journal writes.  They know who they are.  I have conferenced with each and made sure they know what to write.  Please check your child’s writing journal to see if they need to complete some work.  Thank you!

Social Studies News

We are still working on finding facts and understanding the importance of the six of our Country’s Founding Fathers.  We will continue this after Spring Break and test at the end of the week of April 17, 2016.  The Founding Fathers we must know about are:  George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, John Marshall, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison.  Students will be working on a special project with these leaders after Spring Break.

Fourth Grade News

Spring Pictures are here!  Picture packages have been sent home with students.  If you would like to purchase the entire package, please keep package and return payment no later than Friday, April 21st.  If you only want a portion of the package, keep what you want and return unpurchased pictures and payment no later than Friday, April 21st.  If you do not want to purchase any pictures, please return the entire package no later than Friday, April 21st.  When a student returns the package and/or payment, I will give them 5 BHE bucks!
