Math News

We have gotten off to a great start with our Measurement unit.  Our 3 objectives are:
Objective 1:  I can convert and explain the size of customary units. (lb, oz, inches, feet, yards, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons).
Objective 2:  I can convert and explain the size of metric units. (mm, cm, m, km, kg, g, km, m, L, kL).
Objective 3:  I can solve word problems involving intervals of time and money.

Students should have completed all of Objective 1’s work and quick check by the end of class today.  If they did not, they may want to work over the weekend so that we can begin objective 2 on the metric system on Monday.  Our plan is to take the unit test on or around Thursday, November 9th.
If we have moved on to an objective and a student has not completed their classwork and/or quick checks, we cannot wait and have them fall further and further behind.  It is important that students stay up to date with their work.  Once we move ahead, 0’s will be recorded in the gradebook for any missing work.  I cannot continue to go back to work that we should have completed to update my gradebook.  This past nine weeks we were practicing our routines--it should be habit by now.  Please encourage your child to work at home if needed to stay up to date with assignments.
Homework packets will be sent home Monday.  They are to be completed by Friday.  Students also need to master at least 5 topics in ALEKS during the week.  If for some reason, they have not mastered them by Friday, students can (and are encouraged) to finish over the weekend.  I don’t run my report until Monday morning.  I will be putting the last 2 week of ALEKS in the gradebook on Monday for the first ALEKS grade of the nine weeks.
If you still need to join Seesaw, please click here and follow the directions.

Science News

We will begin our next unit of study in Science next week.  We will be exploring outer space!  This unit is fun and action packed.  One project will involve observing the moon each night for a month and being able to see the moon go through its phases.  We will also explore the 8 planets, what causes seasons, and what causes day and night.  We will also enjoy learning about the patterns in the night sky involving constellations.  Please continue to encourage your child to stay up to date with all science activities as we move along.

ELA News
Next week we will focus on understanding theme in literary texts. We will read a number of folktales, fables, and myths over the course of the week and practice with the Text Dependent Analysis. Our word focus will be on homophones (words that sound the same but are not spelled the same) Students will test on irregular plurals Tuesday

File:New.gif - Wikimedia CommonsTHIS WEEK - Something NEW is coming your child’s way with their reading log! Look out for further information about these changes via email from me this weekend - TECHNOLOGY will be involved!

What you can do at home to help your child be successful:
  • Discuss What Your Child is Reading and help them complete weekly Reading Responses which will now be checked as they are submitted via Seesaw (teacher has to approve each post before it is viewable by other students)
  • Find Reasons to Write outside of the Classroom
  • Play Educational Games/Watch Educational Videos - LEXIA and STUDY ISLAND can be used at home

Social Studies News

File:Le-griffon.jpg - Wikimedia CommonsOver the Weekend - Please have your child study his/her notes on Reasons for Exploration. (The presentation is in Google Classroom) They were suppose to have a quiz today, but I postponed it until Monday. They have a notepage and notes in their social studies journal!

Next Week’s Indicators 4-1.4 Summarize the accomplishments of the Vikings and the Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French explorers, including Leif Eriksson, Columbus, Hernando de Soto, Magellan, Henry Hudson, John Cabot, and La Salle.

File:Project news.jpg - Wikimedia CommonsStudents have Projects!!! Please be on the lookout for an email from me on Sunday which will include guidelines. This project will be a creative one that students will complete at home - they will choose any one of the explorers listed in the standard above to conduct research on. They will create a poster and become an “expert” - studying to become that person for a gallery walk that other fourth graders will “walk through.” Can’t wait to see the results! I had some pretty amazing projects last year!

Remember:
  • Students (and now parents) can access Google Classroom at home. All presentations and special links are posted there as references. Students may use these references when studying and completing weekly RAP questions. Some links are interactive games and videos! (Parents please check your emails for my invite)
  • RAP Questions are assigned every Thursday and it is highly encouraged that students use notes to complete. Social Studies journals will come home on Thursday.
  • A parent study guide has been issued for your personal use (so you can help your child if for some reason they are missing information or you aren’t exactly abreast on your history!)

We talked about climate vs. weather this week.  Ask your child to tell you the difference between the two.  I will be creating a weather unit test and study guide this weekend.  I will give these study guides out on Monday.  The test will be given on Thursday.  We will review all week with some fun games.  Please encourage your child to study so that they will be successful on the test.

If your child has finished their video and/or weather report, they are uploaded into Seesaw.  I have enjoyed watching them and really seeing some personalities come out through the camera.  I hope you enjoy their hard work.  If you come by the room, there are some QR codes on the bulletin board for you to view some other presentations also.

Our next unit will be Space.  We will begin this unit next Friday.

Math News

We are ready to take our Unit 3--Multiplication and Division test.  We will be taking the test on Wednesday.  Most everyone is up to date on their checklist.  Everyone should be completed with Objective 3 by Monday morning.  They cannot take the quick check at home, but can do everything else at home if needed.  They can take the quick check during homeroom Monday morning and then be ready to complete Objective 4 in class on Monday and Tuesday.

I sent home a study guide this weekend.  They do not have to work on it, unless they want to start studying and/or know that Monday and Tuesday nights they will not have time.  The plan is that Monday night they complete the front and we go over in class Tuesday and Tuesday night they complete the back and we go over it on Wednesday before we take the test.  They will then turn it in before the test and that will be their homework packet for the week.  That’s right--there will not be a normal homework packet going home this week--just the study guide due by Wednesday.

If you still need to join Seesaw, please click here and follow the directions.
I will be putting an ALEKS grade in the gradebook on Monday morning.  Students should have at least 10 topics mastered within the last 2 weeks.

Science News

Students worked on their Wild Weather reports all week in class.  The Breaking Report was turned in Wednesday and I have uploaded a picture of them into Seesaw.  We are working on the video using Screencastify.  Students are creating a Google slide with a background and a slide with pictures of what they need to prepare for their storm.  They can then use screencastify and record themselves reading their report.  When they are complete, we will upload them into Seesaw as well.  A few have finished and I have loved watching them--I know you will too!

This next week we will complete our last lesson in our weather unit on climate.  We will take a final weather test around the 24th.  There will be a study guide for this final test available closer to the test date.
