Math News

We took our topic 13 unit test yesterday.  This will be the first grade of the last nine weeks.  I also gave extra credit points (up to 10 points) for any ALEKS topics that students worked on this week.

When we return from Spring Break, we will continue talking about decimals and work some more on converting decimals and fractions.  We will also be working a lot on word problems this nine weeks and trying to get students to pull out important information. We will also work on reading our problems and making sure we do everything asked in the problem.  You may have noticed on past tests points taken for not following through with all steps in problems--we will work on that.

Please have your child practice their multiplication facts.  There are many games on www.multiplication.com that they would love to play that will help them.

If you still need to join Seesaw, please click here and follow the directions.

We finished up our Organisms unit this week.  We will begin our last unit when we return on Light and Sound.  There is an assignment in Study Island on Light and Sound that students will work on throughout the month.  I will give a grade on these lessons near the end of April. I will average the two best scores together for one grade.

We had lots of excitement in our incubator this week.  We hatched about 20 chicks! They were a bit noisy at times, but it was very exciting to see them come out of their shells and then to see them “fluff” right on up.  Thanks again to the Yeary family for helping us to have this wonderful experience! To see some picture of our chicks and the fun we had holding them, click here.

WRITING BOOTCAMP AND BOOK CLUBS
TDA practice - Monday and Tuesday “A Trip to the Aquarium” in honor of our field study that will take place Wednesday, April 11, 2018 to Charleston, SC! Students will complete final drafts before end of week and class will learn about and practice friendly and effective peer editing!

Some students may have received letters about Spring Literature Clubs based on current reading levels and MAP scores, work ethic, and the readiness of a good challenge. If your child got this paper and you returned it, THANK YOU! Books will cost less than $5 - most available for only $2.75! (If you didn’t sign and return yet, please send with child to school when we return from break). Students will vote on which books they want to read Monday, April 9th so they can be purchased and ready for use the next week. Students who did not receive this letter will still get to participate in a book club - Ms. Bodrick’s Book Club and we will be doing another novel study - this time on The Cricket in Times Square.

Upon the return of spring break, we will continue to learn about the makings of our nation’s government and Constitution by which it is outlined. We will review the Articles of Confederation and its apparent weaknesses and and talk about how the U.S. Constitution is different and much stronger. We will learn about the Bill of Rights, the three branches of government, and the Constitution's amendments. Students may use the links in Google Classroom, along with following resources to learn/explore more about this topic.

Math News

This week we have worked with decimals and fractions.  We now know that if you can make a fraction equivalent with a denominator of 10 or 100, you can easily convert to a decimal.  We also learned that knowing a little about money also helps with decimals. For example, because we know that 1 quarter is 25 cents, ¼ is equal to 0.25 and because 3 quarters is 75 cents, ¾ is equal to 0.75.

We will take the topic 13 test on Wednesday of next week so that we can start a new unit after spring break.  Please have your child practice with decimals and fractions over the weekend and next week. There will be no homework packet next week, so working on ALEKS nightly will help them with their test.  They can work on their decimal and fraction topics.

Please have your child practice their multiplication facts.  There are many games on www.multiplication.com that they would love to play that will help them.  Some of our classmates competed in Mr. Saxon’s March Madness Multiplication Game.  Congratulations to the Multiplication Tug Strikers and The Fast and Furious 4 for making it to the semi-finals.  They fought hard, but unfortunately didn’t make it to the finals.  Congratulations on a great competition!

Science News

This week we worked on our Organism projects.  Students completed a 4 slide presentation about an organism of their choosing.  These projects have been uploaded into Seesaw if they are finished. We started sharing them today in class and will continue sharing on Monday.  If you haven’t seen it in Seesaw, they need to upload it by Monday--it is the last day of the nine weeks.

They have also been working on 3 lessons in Study Island on organisms.  They must have these 3 lessons completed by the end of class on Monday.  I will average their best scores for each lesson for a cumulative score that will count as a test grade.  Study Island is a great way for students to practice math facts and learn more about science topics. They have built in lessons and videos and then students can practice what they have learned.  To log into study island, students will use their student number without the zeros and a dash bhe. For example: 12345-bhe and then the password is bears.

We hope to get to school on Monday morning and  hear the chirping our our little chicks! We should also be able to witness some hatching on Monday during the day.  Thanks again to the Yeary family for providing our eggs and allowing students to witness this miracle!

We do still have a lot of work to do and students have yet another opportunity to shine! Here are a few pictures from our ice cream celebration today! Also be on the lookout for certificates! Some students received them for making big gains and exceeding their goals. I have included the breakdown of end-of-year goal scores for 4th grade to help you better understand your child’s number!

Math News

We have been working hard this week on review for MAP and beginning a new topic.  We started topic 13 in our textbook on multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Next week we will work on comparing fractions to decimals.  Ms. Bodrick’s homeroom will take the Math portion of MAP on Wednesday. (Mrs. Benson’s homeroom is taking the Reading portion on Wednesday.) Please make sure to complete homework for that spiral review of all math concepts we have covered this year.

Congratulations to Brooke, Princess, Courtney, Austin, Jordan M., Kaleb, Heather, Emerson, Eddie, and Aiden!  They all mastered at least 10 topics each of the 3 weeks of our ALEKS Challenge! They earned a popcorn party which was held today!  Collectively, the 10 of them mastered 559 topics over the last 3 weeks!!!!! Three of them earned over 80 topics each during the three weeks.  Two of them even advanced to 6th grade ALEKS where the topics are a lot tougher. I am so proud of everyone giving their best efforts in this challenge!

Please have your child practice their multiplication facts.  There are many games on www.multiplication.com that they would love to play that will help them.  Some of our classmates are competing in Mr. Saxon’s March Madness Multiplication Game.  Congratulations to the Multiplication Tug Strikers for moving on to the semi-finals.  Good luck to The Fast and Furious 4 who will compete early next week to see if they make it to the semi-finals also.  Keep practicing facts on Tug Team!

Science News

This week we talked about how our senses help us to survive.  We talked about how plants and animals react to different stimuli--for example, a turtle reacts to touch by retracting into their shells.  We will finish up our animal unit next week by completing an animal project. Details will be given to students on Monday. This project will be due on Friday and will count as a major test grade.  Students will also be completing a Study Island activity that will count as a test grade to finish up our animal unit.

We candled our eggs today and we have many, many baby chicks growing.  We hope to see them hatching on Monday, March 26th.

ELA News
After reading Dr. Seuss’ “Oh the Places You’ll Go” for Read Across America Day, and in light of Career Day at BHE on March 20th, students were told to visualize where they see themselves 10 years from now - whether in college studying for a specific occupation, military, or already in a career - and do research on the careers of their dreams! Students did presentations Wednesday-Friday and they could dress the part if they wanted. It was evident over the course of the week that they had so much fun and were excited to share with their peers what they had learned!!!! AND the work was really good!!! Here are some pictures!!!!

Next week MAP Testing will continue!!!! Benson’s Homeroom will test in Reading on Wednesday, March 21st. We will go over MAP goals Monday and review test-taking tips! Please make sure your child is at school on time as testing will being at 8:30am.
After MAP testing, students will go CAMPING as we continue to learn about/explore informational text structures! (My apologies that this did not happen this week - career presentations took up a vast majority of class time that I didn’t factor into plans)
