Math News

We worked very hard this week to multiply multi-digit numbers.  Students will take a multi-digit multiplication test the Wednesday we return.  We will review Monday and Tuesday for this test. We will begin Topic 9 on Thursday when we return.  This is our first unit on division.

Math station booklets will also be given out when we return.  Students will have about 3 weeks to work on these activities. They can use “work time” in class and any other spare time they have.  If needed, they can also be worked on at home. Please encourage your child to work on them a little at a time so they are turned in in a timely manner.

Please continue to encourage your child to complete their ALEKS topics each week.  This is a great way to get up to 10 extra credit points each week.

Science News

This week we discussed the reason we have seasons--the tilt of the Earth and the revolution the Earth takes around the sun.  We also talked about the phases of the moon. There will be a full moon on Saturday, December 22nd. Please ask your child to tell you why we have a full moon--they should tell you it is because the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth as the sun.

When we return, we will finish up talking about the moon and then start working on some constellations.  We will take an astronomy unit test around the 23rd or 24th of January. When we have a definite date, I will put it on the Math and Science calendar.

CHRISTMAS - NOT A HUMBUG!
This week, students got the opportunity to engage in yet another FUN, but complex text -  Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. It is a holiday favorite of mines and I’ve grown to love doing it each year with my students even though the original text is suitable for late middle and high school. Of course I shared with them a version that was more forward and to the point and despite the fact that it was 38 pages long - they enjoyed EVERY BIT of it! The movie they watched afterwards yesterday/today took the cake! If your child for some reason is eager to view again or can’t stop talking about the story - or maybe your child was absent on these last couple days - Disney’s A Christmas Carol is coming on Freeform on Christmas Eve and day so check your program guides!!! It’ll be loads of fun to enjoy together as a family at home for the holidays!

READING OVER THE BREAK
Reading logs will continue upon return in the new year. However, until then, I do strongly suggest that your child does continue to read over the holiday/winter break. Students do not have to write about their reading (unless you or they want to - which is great), but it is critical that they at least talk about their reading. Make sure that you are requiring them to speak in complete sentences when they do - as this is the requirement for when responses are written on the log (and given aloud in class).

READING/WRITING - Text Dependent Analysis
Over the past couple weeks, students have been reading and working on their text-dependent analysis for “The Fisherman and His Wife” by the Brothers Grimm (yet another story they thoroughly loved). However, because I wanted to stop and focus our attention on our holiday piece, we paused our essays (although many were almost done). When students return in the new year, they will finish composing their essays that answered the focus question “Why does the sea change colors throughout the story?” When they are done, they should have a clear introduction, body (or development as it is referred to on the SC Ready Writing rubric), and conclusion. ALSO, before their hard work is displayed out for all to see, they will have the chance to do some watercolor paintings where they paint what they see the sea as - just as it is described in the text!

Moreover, we also discussed types of sentences and will continue this discussion in the new year as we begin to add more sentence variety to our writing. Students learned about simple, compound, and complex sentences - as well as parts of speech (which we find in all sentences). They do have notes in their binders so having them study those while they are out would be awesome!

Social Studies News
In the coming weeks, we will learn about Early Settlements and Colonization in the New World. Parents please refer to the parent study guide you were given and even have your child review Social Studies content covered thus far. RAP Questions will resume in the new year - apologies for the lack thereof!

Math News

I have been amazed at how well students have been multiplying and working very hard this week on their Holiday Multiplication Checklist.  Many are almost to the point of doing the Bonus Materials which include some higher level thinking activities. I think most will be ready for the bonus materials by Wednesday of next week.  Please continue to encourage them to keep up the pace and do their best. Two of the assignments on the checklist are graded and will be recorded in the gradebook. These must be done at school and students can’t complete the red box items at home.

We will not take a unit test until after winter break.  I will review on Monday and Tuesday when we return and then take a unit test on all multiplication.

Math stations booklets are due Tuesday, December 18th.  Students have been working on these for 3 weeks and several have turned them in already.

Please continue to encourage your child to complete their ALEKS topics each week.  This is a great way to get up to 10 extra credit points each week.

Science News

This week we investigated shadows. Students measured how long our shadow is at the beginning of the day by holding a flashlight level to the desk and shining it at a pencil and then again how long it was at noon when the flashlight was held directly over the pencil.  Students also watched a video about the seasons. We will continue to discuss the seasons and earth’s revolution around the sun next week. We will also start discussing the moon phases that we were able to see while we completed our moon calendars.

Math News

We have had another great week multiplying 1-digit numbers by 2-, 3-, and 4-digit numbers.  Students are working very hard to master the different strategies and are finding out which one is their favorite.  Please continue to encourage them to learn their basic multiplication facts. This will help tremendously as we move to 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication next week.

The next two weeks, we will be completing topics 7 and 8 in the textbook.  However, to make it a little more fun, we will add a little holiday spin to our work.  Students will be given a Holiday Multiplication checklist that looks like a game board on Monday.  They will go around the game board throughout the two weeks completing the activities. Some of the activities include a snowball fight, color by number multiplication, and a bonus activity with multiple activities on planning a trip to Grandma’s for the holidays.  I will be working with small groups on hands on activities to learn multiplication and assisting any that need help. Please encourage your child to keep pace with the activities.  They should be able to complete the required work within the two weeks and we will hopefully test before the break.  If we don’t do a formal test before the break, there are 2 graded assignments worked into the checklist that will count in the gradebook.

Reminder:  Study Island Assignment #6 is due next Friday.  Several students have not done any lessons on this assignment and it was assigned 2 weeks ago.  Please encourage your child to complete these lessons so that they can participate and complete their game board next week.  Math stations booklets are also due Tuesday, December 18th. Students have been working on these for 2 weeks and several have turned them in already.

There will be no homework packet next week so that students can work on their holiday checklist instead.

Please continue to encourage your child to complete their ALEKS topics each week.  This is a great way to get up to 10 extra credit points each week.

Science News

Moon calendars are due next week on Thursday.  Students should have been observing the moon for the last 3 weeks--one more to go.

This week we talked about why the Earth has day and night.  Ask your student what they learned about rotation and see if they can explain day and night to you.  They also could probably tell you how old they would be if they lived on Mercury. (It’s about 7 times their age right now.)

Next week we will talk about shadows and move onto seasons.

READING LOGS
Reading logs are assigned every week. Students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes and then respond to their reading using the question bank provided in their binder for fiction and nonfiction books. Your child is only required to answer one question a night on the reading response sheet provided. Please check weekly - if not every night - to make sure that your child is completing this task.  I will now be grading the logs based on the actual quality of the responses. Students will still receive a grade of 100 at the beginning of the quarter - but I will take off 1 point for every day that is not completed thoroughly. If the log is not submitted on Friday, students will lose 5 points from overall grade. If you have any further questions about the reading log, please do not hesitate to email or send a message via Class Dojo.

NO READING LOG NEXT WEEK

READING/WRITING - Text Dependent Analysis
This week we concluded our unit on Folktales and Theme with the popular Brothers Grimm story, “The Fisherman and His Wife”. Over the course of two weeks, we read this more complex text multiple times for different purposes as we learned to analyze in order to respond to a text-dependent analysis. We discussed the components of an essay - introduction, body (or development as it is referred to on the SC Ready Writing rubric), and conclusion - and worked diligently on composing our piece - students answered the following focus question “Why does the sea change colors throughout the story?” Students learned about different ways to hook readers - asking a question, painting and picture in the reader's’ head, and using quotes/figurative language. We talked about the importance of organizing thoughts before writing and completing a graphic organizer. Students will finish the final parts of their essays next week and add conclusions. I am hoping that will get to do some creative projects - like watercolor paintings so students can paint what they see - just as it is described in the text!

Social Studies News
This week, students learned about The Columbian Exchange - the exchange of plants, animals, diseases, and new ways of life between the New and Old World (Eastern and Western Hemispheres). Students were expected to by the end of the week summarize the Columbian Exchange and again were required to label a map of Earth’s continents - this time, the four major continents involved in this exchange - North and South America, Europe and Africa and the items that were shared between them. In the coming weeks, we will learn about Early Settlements and Colonization in the New World.

Math News

We have worked really hard this week learning many different strategies to help with multi-digit multiplication.  We have multiplied 2-, 3-, and 4-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. Ask your child what their favorite strategy is and see if they can show you how to multiply.  We will take the Topic 6 test next Friday, december 7th.

Please continue to encourage your child to complete their ALEKS topics each week.  This is a great way to get up to 10 extra credit points each week.

Science News

We have been observing the moon for the last couple of weeks.  Students were given their moon log on Wednesday, November 14th.  I have also included it in Google classroom with the link to see the moon if it is cloudy or not out when students go to bed.  They are required to observe the moon each night for 28 days so that they may see the moon make one complete cycle. Please remind them to do this everyday and not wait until the last week to just copy them off of the internet.  They will learn so much more if they go out searching each night or morning for the moon. It is a great activity for families to take some time and look at all the amazing things in the night sky. They should have seen the moon go from full moon and how it starts to get smaller now.  By the middle of next week, it will be a New Moon and students will not see the moon at all for a couple of nights.

This week we have researched astronomy tools that help in navigation.  Students defined the instrument, found a picture of it, and told of its importance in navigation.  They even wrote a letter to the editor (in their journals) that was to give the editor great reasons why these instruments are so important in navigation and why we should continue learning of them in school.

Next week we will move onto the Earth’s rotation and how it causes day and night.  We will also start discussing shadows in relation to the sun.
