Math News

We have been working hard this week adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators.  Common mistakes are: (1) adding the denominators and (2) not simplifying the answer.  When adding fractions, as long as the denominators are the same (like denominators), you only add the numerators and keep the same denominator.  For example:  ⅗ + ⅕ = ⅘  not 4/10.  Instructions also often tell students to simplify the fraction.  For example:  A final answer will never be 3/6 or 2/4 or 5/10.  It will always be written as ½.  The final answer for 3/9 will be ⅓ because the Greatest Common Factor of 3 and 9 is 3.  Divide them both by 3 and you get ⅓.  Please help your child remember to check for these common mistakes before turning in their work.

We will be having a math test on adding and subtracting fractions on Thursday of next week.  Please encourage your child to study for the test and to complete all of their objective work by that date.

I am not grading ALEKS right now.  I am strongly encouraging students to go to Study Island and do the NWEA practice to prepare for the MAP tests.  They can work on the math lesson and the ELA lessons.  More information on MAP testing below.

This week we had fun learning about how animals are classified.  We discussed vertebrates vs. invertebrates.  We had a fun scavenger hunt around the room learning about the 5 groups of vertebrates.  We ended our week with a fun experiment to see how important our backbone is to us.  Pictures will be on the blog to view our fun experiment.  Next week we will finish our discussions of animal classifications and take a quiz to demonstrate our knowledge.  We will then move on to the life cycle of animals.

Language Arts News.

Monday, February 27th, we will take a Spelling test on the following words:
Persuade
Government
Entertain
Judicial
Electoral
Congress
President
Please have your child study for this test.  There will be homework throughout the week that will be written in your child’s agenda.  Students should be reading for at least 20 minutes every night.  Please check and sign daily.

Next week’s ELA lessons will be focused on author’s purpose, syllables, phonetics with the letter “u”, comprehension, writing to solve problems, and synonyms & antonyms.  The spelling words that we will be focusing on next week are:  legislature, senate, veto, argue, electricity, executive, federalism, amendment, impeach, appeal.  The test on these words will be Friday, March 3rd.

Social Studies News

We are working on Unit 6, Lessons 2 and 3 (pages 206-220). The Constitution of the United States.  A packet of completed work will come home on Tuesday for the previous weeks.  Please sign and return.

Fourth Grade News

Next week is Dr. Seuss Week!  Monday is Horton Hears a Who Day.  Students should perform random acts of kindness.  Tuesday is Fox in Socks Day--wear your favorite wacky socks.  Wednesday is The Lorax Day.  Thursday is Read Across America Day--students should dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character.

Next Friday is Arts Day.  We will spend the entire day celebrating all of the arts as we venture around the school watching different types of performances and displays of art.

Thursday, March 9th is Spring Picture day!  Wear your pretty spring colors.

BHE’s night at Chick-fil-A is coming soon!  Mark your calendars for Monday, March 13th and come out and support BHE at the Chick-fil-A on Killian Road.

We will be administering the MAP tests on March 14th and 15th.  They will be completed during the morning so please make sure your child is on time to school and has had a good breakfast.

We have been having some issues with water bottles lately.  They have leaked in backpacks and ruined brand new library books, spilled on floors and caused people to fall, and turned over on desks spilling near chromebooks.  Please try and send in water bottles that have no spill spouts.  Do not send in cups or anything that does not close.  Students should only be bringing in water to drink--no gatorade, soft drinks, or juices.  We have sticky messes on our floors from non water drinks.  Thanks for helping in these issues.

You only have one more week to earn your free Fireflies ticket!  You can get it for the Sunday, April 28th game (which is the designated BHE day at the Fireflies), or you can use it for another game.  Have your child write their books on their baseball reading log and you initial after each book.  Bring the reading log to the media center and Mrs. Jeffers will give you the information on how you can get that free ticket.  (Adults will have to buy their own ticket.)

Ending Thoughts
We are very excited for this school year and to be able to teach your child.  You may email us anytime there is a concern.  Click on our name below for a direct link to our email.

Math News

IMG_4468.JPGMath tests went home Thursday along with a breakdown of all of the nine weeks grade so far.  Please make sure to look through those.  We had fun Thursday with some M&M fractions.  We also took a computation practice quiz on Friday where students had to practice their multi-digit multiplication, long division, and adding and subtracting large numbers.

Next week we will begin our next fraction unit--adding and subtracting fractions.  Please encourage your child to complete all of their classwork since this counts in their grades each unit.  This past unit we had many students who did not complete all of their classwork.  I know they were working, but they did not follow through with completing it and turning it into our work baskets.

I am going to take a break from grading ALEKS for a couple of weeks.  They can certainly still work on topics, but I am encouraging students to go to Study Island and do the MAP practice problems during our RTI time each day.  This will get them ready for MAP testing which will take place near the beginning of March.

Science News

This week we finished up plant life cycles and started talking about the classification of animals.  We will continue next week learning about how animals are classified.  There may be a quiz later in the week about the different classifications of animals.  The reading material that students can study in their books is on pages 167-176.

Language Arts News.

IMG_4478.JPGPlease encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each night.

We are having a class baseball game with our reading.  Every four books is a homerun.  Let’s see which homeroom has the most runs by the end of February.  Books need to be at your child’s reading level.  Students need to write the book title down and a parent must sign next to the title to let us know that the book has been read.  May the best class win!

Continue to have your child review the SS material at home.

Classes of the Week

Mrs. Benson's Class and Mrs. Cave's Class were awarded the BHE Class of the Week honor for the week of February 13th!  Below is the reason why we all were nominated.

I had the opportunity to work with Coach Johnson last week during 4th grade related arts.  Mrs. Cave and Mrs. Benson's classes were practicing jumping with Chinese jump ropes and had to work in groups of three.  I was so impressed with the way they welcomed students into their groups, but the best thing I observed was the encouragement they gave each other while trying to master this difficult skill.  I heard lots of students clapping for their classmates and saying "Good job"!  These fourth grade students truly demonstrated respect to each other.  It was a pleasure to work with them.--Mrs. Jeffers

Math News

We will continue our fraction unit next week.  We are going to review on Monday and Tuesday and then take the Unit 9: equivalent fractions test on Wednesday.  Thursday we will be doing some fun activities with fractions and then moving on with more fraction fun the week after.  We will be adding and subtracting fractions next.

Remember to have your child do their ALEKS every week.  (This is preparing them for 5th grade when they are required to do 10 a week.)  Students are still required to complete 5 topics in ALEKS each week, however if they complete up to 10, they will receive up to 5 bonus points.  So for example, if they complete 8 topics, they will have 3 extra credit points.  If they complete 10 topics they will have 5 extra credit points.  No more than 5 extra credit points will be awarded in a week.

Science News

We had fun learning about the life cycles of a plant this week.  We are watching a radish and a lima bean sprout.  They are hanging in ziploc bags in our window and we are charting their growth.  We also created new plants, named them, described them, and illustrated them.  We are finishing up putting them into our Google slideshow.  If your child has not finished, please have them finish over the weekend so that we can all enjoy their new plant.

We have been using a program called “See Saw” lately with both math and science.  Students are able to draw and even use the audio feature to explain things.  It is almost like a facebook for kids because they can also “like” their friends posts and comment on them.  We are still working on our comment etiquetter  The great thing is that I have to approve anything put on the class wall so that nothing gets on their that is inappropriate.  If you would like to have access to your child’s work, follow the below steps.
1. Mrs. Benson’s homeroom:  Go to https://app.seesaw.me/s/850-904-612 in any web browser.
Mrs. Cave’s homeroom:  Go to https://app.seesaw.me/s/002-809-615 in any web browser.
2. Choose your child from the class list and create an account.
3. After you’ve been approved by your child’s teacher, you’ll get access to their journal

Language Arts News.
We will be finishing the story, “The Life and Times of the Ant”.  We will have the test on Wednesday or Thursday.  Make sure your child is reading a book on their reading level each night.  This can count towards their Fireflies reading log to earn a free ticket. (See below for details.)

Social Studies News

We will start Unit 6, Lesson 2 next week.  Please ask for signed papers that went home today.

Fourth Grade News

Valentine’s Day is next week.  We do not have any type of party to celebrate, but we know that students still like to share valentine’s with their friends.  If your child wants to bring valentine’s to share, they must bring one for each person in the class.  (There are 20 students in Mrs. Benson’s class and 21 students in Mrs. Cave’s class.)  They can simply put who the valentine is from and this will make it easier to pass out.  We will let them pass them out at the end of the day.

With it being cold season, we have had a lot of absences.  If your child is absent from school, it is their responsibility to complete any missing work.  They will be given an extra day or two, but after that the work will be considered late.  Too many times lately, we have had students that are absent and they are making no effort to complete the work they missed while being absent.  Our daily classwork is important and is graded for completion.  Please encourage your child to get missing assignments and to complete them in a timely manner.  Also, don’t forget those excuses so that they can be turned into the office.

Friday, February 17th is an early dismissal day.  School will be dismissed at 11:30am.  Make sure we know if your child has a different form of transportation.
