Math News

This past week, students have continued learning about the relationship between fractions and decimals.  They should be through objective 2 on their checklist by Monday so that Tuesday or Wednesday they will take their Objective 1 and 2 Test on decimals and fractions.  Everyone will not necessarily take their test the same day, but all tests will be taken by the end of class on Wednesday.  We will continue on with learning more about decimals after Spring Break.  Please continue to encourage students to complete homework so that they have a spiral review of all of the 4th grade materials.

ALEKS topics are being graded again.  Some students did not complete any ALEKS topics last week while many students completed their required 10 topics plus some extra topics.  Students have homeroom each day, if they are a bus rider they have time while waiting for their bus, and students are given time during the RTI block to work on ALEKS.  They should be completing their topics at school, however, if they do not complete 10, please have them get it done at home by Sunday night.  I will print a report Monday morning.  Students should be completing a minimum of 10 topics a week.  I am trying to get them ready for 5th grade this last nine weeks.  In 5th grade, they will be required to master 10 topics a week as part of their grade.

Science News

We had a lot of fun this week finishing up Animal Adaptations.  The SeeSaw posts are on the blog under student work so that you can hear the plays that were recorded and see the great illustrations that went along with the plays.  I have labeled each one with the children who worked on them and the title of the play that was read.  I hope you enjoy them!

We hope to have a few baby chicks next week.  Please keep your fingers crossed!

I am mailing the conservation posters Monday afternoon.  If your child did not turn it in today, they have until Monday before it is considered late.  If they want them mailed, make sure you have completed and signed the parent permission form and have it returned Monday also.

Language Arts News.

This week students read “My Brothers’ Flying Machine” about the Wright brothers.  Students are learning about Author’s Perspective, Fact or Opinion, Similies and Metaphors.  Next week we will continue with these lessons and also add lessons on homophones, and possessive nouns.  We will have a test on this story on Wednesday of next week.  Students are encouraged to read everyday/night for at least 30 minutes.  Our goal is to increase stamina and fluency.  Also, spelling has improved tremendously since we have focused on words we are using in our conversations in Language Arts and Social Studies.  Please remind your child that they are to study their words each week.  Students are assigned words on Monday.  On or BEFORE Thursday sentences and definitions of each word are due in the “basket”.   They can put these on the same sheet of paper front and back.

During Read Aloud time, I am reading Where the Red Fern Grows to the classes.  This is a level 4.9 book.  Students are finding it interesting, yet a whole different world to them.  If you have read this book, I encourage you to talk to your child about it.

Students are also continuing with journal writing.  They have now completed 11 Journal writes since late February.  These writings should be in their writing journals.
Please remember that your student can do Lexia at home to reach their minutes each week.  Some students have reached level 18 (5th grade) and are finished for the year.  I encourage all students to use their time at school and at home wisely.

Social Studies News

This week we have been learning about six of our country’s Founding Fathers.  We have started with George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson.  We will be learning about James Madison, John Monroe, and Alexander Hamilton next week.  They are making booklets with information about these men and their contributions to the beginning of our country.  Students have also done research on three so far.  This is SC Standard 4:4.

Science News

This week we learned about animal and plant adaptations.  We ended the week with a fun activity in SeeSaw where students chose an animal with an adaptation, found a picture of that animal, posted it to SeeSaw, and then told about the adaptation.  They will also be viewing each other’s posts and making scholarly comments about at least 3 of their classmates’ posts.  We will finish up adaptations next week and have some sort of Lesson quiz/test by Friday.  I will let students know at least 2 days in advance of when it will take place.

Language Arts News.

Students will be doing in depth word studies for the next week.  We will be working on writing sentences, paragraphs, small essays, and stories.   Students will continue with weekly spelling words.  Please make sure that you encourage your child to 1) Read every night for at least 25 minutes and 2)  Study their spelling words.

Homework is required to be written down each day in their agendas.  Please check to see that your child has done this and accomplished their assignments.  Together we can help our students grow to be responsible students.  Middle School is right around the corner!

Math News

This week we focused on getting ready for the MAP test!  Everyone did great!  I could tell that they were focused and trying really hard to work the more difficult problems.  I sent home signed papers Thursday that had their scores from the MAP tests attached to the top.  Many met their goals and some were very close.  I told them it gives them something to continue working on.  They can always do ALEKS and Study Island to help improve their future standardized test scores and MAP for the beginning of next year.

Next week I will start grading ALEKS topics again.  Students should be completing a minimum of 10 topics a week.  Please encourage your child to work hard at school to finish them and if they don’t please allow them to work at home.  I am trying to get them ready for 5th grade this last nine weeks.  In 5th grade, they will be required to master 10 topics a week as part of their grade.

This next week we will continue to discuss multiplying fractions.  For example, ⅓ of 9 is 3 and ½ of 10 is 5.  We will also learn ⅔ of 12 = 8.  We will also break a fraction down into a multiplication sentence using a unit fraction.  For example:  ⅔ = 2 x ⅓ ; ¾ = 3 x ¼
We will have another quiz on Friday that is formatted like the homework.  Please continue to encourage your child to complete their homework.  We will do problems similar to homework each day for our problems of the day so that students are ready for the quiz on Friday.  This is cumulative review--nothing new.

Science News

We finished up Chapter 4 this week and will be moving on to Chapter 5 next week.  We will discuss animal adaptations and habitats.  We were able to start incubating 24 eggs on Tuesday.  They should be hatching (if we did everything right) the week before spring break.  They take 21 days to incubate.  We will candle them today or Monday to see which ones were fertilized and have started to grow!

On a personal note, I would like to thank you parents for your patience and support of me as I have endeavored to merge back into the classroom.  I am a retired teacher and my last 11 years were in middle school Science.  I taught elementary for 19 years, but many things have changed.  Our students are wonderful but no matter how wonderful, they are still children and need guidance.  Thank you again for your patience.

This week we took our Unit test on adding and subtracting fractions.  I allowed students to make corrections to their test when I was out and will have those corrected by next week.  I will count the original score as one grade and the corrected test as another grade.

This next week we will be discussing multiplying fractions.  For example, ⅓ of 9 is 3 and ½ of 10 is 5.  We will also learn ⅔ of 12 = 8.  We will have a quiz next Friday before moving on to fractions as decimals.  We will also spend time in Study Island preparing for the MAP tests.

We explored life cycles this week.  We will be taking a test on Thursday that will be a cumulation of Chapter 4 in the science textbook.  Study Guides will go home before then.  We would love to hatch some eggs in our new incubator.  If any of you know anyone that would be willing to donate some fertilized chicken eggs, we would love to have them.  We would even give back to them the chicks that hatch.  We are in need of about 24 - 36 eggs.  Thanks!

Math News

We postponed our math test until Tuesday, March 7th.  We will take our test on addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators. The two main problems students are having are:  (1) simplifying fractions and (2) subtracting mixed numbers when the top fraction part is smaller than the bottom fraction part.  For example 3 ¼ - 1 ¾ .  Students should rename 3 ¼ to 2 54 and then subtract 1 ¾ to get a final answer of 1 24and then simplify that to 1 ½.

I am not grading ALEKS right now.  I am strongly encouraging students to go to Study Island and do the NWEA practice to prepare for the MAP tests.  They can work on the math lesson and the ELA lessons.  MAP testing will be March 14th and 15th.  Mrs. Benson’s homeroom will take Math on Tuesday and ELA on Wednesday.  Mrs. Cave/Browne’s homeroom will take ELA on Tuesday and Math on Wednesday.  They will take Math in Mrs. Benson’s room and ELA in Mrs. Browne’s room.

Science News

We finished talking about animal classification this week and have moved onto animal life cycles.  We will do some station activities this week talking about the life cycles.  I anticipate a test on Friday or Monday of the next week and this will be a cumulative test on Chapter 4.

Language Arts News.
Students will start small groups next week.  Please encourage your child to read at least 25 minutes each night.  We are trying to get books on their level from the library.  Spelling tests will be every Friday.

Most students have shown terrific improvement from last week to this week.  Please continue to encourage them to read and study.

Social Studies News

In Social Studies we will be completing lessons 3-5 on pages 216 - 233 next week.  The following week (March 13-17) we will complete the chapter review, study, and test on Unit 6:  Founding the Nation.

Current grades should be online very soon!  I am still waiting for my district log-in.  Thank you for your patience.

Thursday, March 9th is Spring Picture day!  Wear your pretty spring colors.

BHE’s night at Chick-fil-A is coming soon!  Mark your calendars for Monday, March 13th and come out and support BHE at the Chick-fil-A on Killian Road.

We will be administering the MAP tests on March 14th and 15th.  They will be completed during the morning so please make sure your child is on time to school and has had a good breakfast.

We have been having some issues with water bottles lately.  They have leaked in backpacks and ruined brand new library books, spilled on floors and caused people to fall, and turned over on desks spilling near chromebooks.  Please try and send in water bottles that have no spill spouts.  Do not send in cups or anything that does not close.  Students should only be bringing in water to drink--no gatorade, soft drinks, or juices.  We have sticky messes on our floors from non water drinks.  Thanks for helping in these issues.

The end of the nine weeks is Tuesday, March 21st.  Report cards will come home on March 30th.
