Math News

This week we reviewed some Geometry facts.  We reviewed lines, points, line segments, rays, angles, triangles, and quadrilaterals.  Students completed Study Island review lessons and a packet of review worksheets. This packet was due today.  This will be graded and a grade will be recorded in the gradebook. If your child was absent or did not turn in their completed packet, please make sure they turn it in on Monday.

Next week we will focus on Numbers and Operations:  addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  We will probably sneak some fractions in as well. Students will be completing Study Island review lessons, review packets, and playing some fun games with Mrs. Benson.  We will do an escape classroom activity on Friday if all of our work is complete.

Homework packets will come home on Monday.  These packets will be filled with review material to help get us ready for standardized tests in a couple of weeks.

Please have your child practice their multiplication facts.  There are many games on www.multiplication.com that they would love to play that will help them.

Science News

We continued talking about light this week and how light passes through opaque, transparent, and translucent materials.  We also discussed the brightness of light depending on the intensity and distance.

Next week we will start talking about sound and how sound waves travel.

WRITING BOOTCAMP
This week, students got a break from our writing bootcamp as it was a short, fun-filled arts week! Next week, we will continue - but instead of providing students with new reading selection and TDA prompt - we will revisit their scored Middle of Year District Benchmarks! The MOY text-dependent analysis was completed in January and was scored by someone other than myself so students will actually get to see what someone else thinks about their writing - just as someone else will score their SC Ready writing assessments. We will work together as a class to break the passages down so that students can recognize their mistakes and think about ways they could have done better.

For your viewing so you know what your child is expected to do in order to effectively complete a TDA: Please click on the link to see the full writing process - organizing of ideas on T-Chart and essay in its entirety: Our TDA on the City Aqaurium https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpkUqYzufwvu3aKKmBH04-qJHVhZ36-uXhGEr5X1zaE/edit?usp=sharing - It is critical that students complete an organizer which will help with analysis and essays must have an introduction, body, and conclusion.

READING - NOVEL STUDIES
Next week, students will also begin engaging in novel studies. For majority of students, from now until testing, we will be reading “A Cricket in Times Square” by George Selden and completing weekly activities targeted at strengthening reading skills (vocabulary, making inferences, connections, determining main idea and theme, etc.). Other students that were invited to participate in the Spring Literature Club Challenge and accepted the invitation will be reading their selected novels (Elijah of Buxton, Walk Two Moons, and Fever 1793) and meeting with their groups (including all students in 4th grade that are a part of the club - so they will get to experience some time outside of the classroom). Please be on the lookout for forthcoming information - will send home with your child.

*If your child did return a permission slip to participate in the Spring Literature Club Challenge, please make sure they have their copy of their book so they can begin reading when everyone else does. I sent an email to all parents of students that turned in a form and completed survey at the beginning of the week.

Special shout out the following Lexia Core 5 Completers!
  • Daija Caldwell
  • Otis Barlow
The following students are almost there! Keep pushing:
Liana Adams, Caroline Goff, Jake Gonzales, Emerson Ramsdale, Darius Gatewood-White and Libby Lee
*Remember LEXIA can be completed at home! Some students are not meeting time each week for a number of reasons, but can if they get some practice in at home too!

WRITING BOOTCAMP
This week’s writing bootcamp was centered around our trip to Charleston, SC as students began the week by responding to a text dependent analysis using the passage “My Trip to the City Aquarium”.
Class began writing on their own with no help and as the week went on, we completed the entire writing process together. Students were able to see what mistakes they made and add tools to their toolbox that will help them with things they could have done better. Please click on the link to see the full writing process - organizing of ideas on T-Chart and essay in its entirety: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpkUqYzufwvu3aKKmBH04-qJHVhZ36-uXhGEr5X1zaE/edit?usp=sharing - what you see is the expectation for all students. It is critical that students complete an organizer which will help with analysis and essays must have an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Next week, we will do writing bootcamp all over again with two new pieces of text entitled “The Greedy Dog” and “The Man and the Golden Fish”! Students will love these selections as they are very similar to one of their favorites, “The Fisherman and His Wife”. I can’t wait to see how students progress and continue to grow over the course of the rest of these final weeks before testing!

Special shout out the following Lexia Core 5 Completers!
  • Emily Lancaster
  • Thomas Bozard
