Math News

We have worked very hard this week on Topic 13.  We have converted fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions.  We will finish topic 13 on Monday, review on Tuesday, and take the topic test on Wednesday, May 1st.  Thursday and Friday we will review measurement--both customary and metric.

Study Island is crucial at this point.  Students are working on Study Island lessons during RTI time instead of ALEKS for the next couple of weeks.  This means that there will be 2 assignments each week. Students will need to work efficiently on these assignments.  I have found in the past that students wait until the last day to work on them. Please encourage your child to start on day 1 of the assignment so that they don’t fall behind.  Next week students will have assignments #15 and #16.

If students finish their Study Island lessons, they can do ALEKS for extra credit.  Until testing is complete, ALEKS will be for extra credit. I will only give 10 points per week so if they do more than 10, I will only put a 10 in the gradebook.  If they don’t do any ALEKS it won’t count against them for those few weeks.

Please, please, please have students working on Study Island over the next month.  It can only help them review and do better on any testing.

Science News

We have had a fun week of exploring light.  We have explored white light (the visible spectrum), refraction, transparent, translucent, and opaque.  Next week we will start discussing sound. We will have some type of graded assignment next week--more details to come.

Students did several creative assignments in their journals this week.  We wrote a postcard to “white light” telling it how much we appreciated it and what it meant to have white light in our life.  We drew a cartoon about refraction. Today we designed an ad that was advertising a transparent object. Please ask your child to see their creative works!

We heard back from Richland County this week and we have 2 winners!  Gabi won 3rd place in our division and Lilly won an honorable mention.  Congratulations girls!!! I am so proud of all of my students for their wonderful art that was turned in!

Math News

We took our topic 12 test on Tuesday.  Those grades were just put in the gradebook today.  Some students did wonderful (100’s and above) and some not so wonderful.  If your child did not do as well as they would like, we will do some review when we return after Spring Break.

When we return, we will have 3 weeks until the Math Standardized testing.  We have one more topic to do--Topic 13. This is about decimals and fractions, which we have touched on over the last couple of weeks.  We will quickly move through this topic and test the last week of April. The first full week of May will be review week. We will be going back to some of our old Study Island lessons and doing another session or two to refresh our minds.

Study Island will be crucial when we return.  I will have students work on Study Island lessons during RTI time instead of ALEKS for those 3 weeks.  This means that there might be 2 assignments in one week. Students will need to work efficiently on these assignments.  I have found in the past that students wait until the last day to work on them. Please encourage your child to start on day 1 of the assignment so that they don’t fall behind.

If students finish their Study Island lessons, they can do ALEKS for extra credit.  Starting the week we return, I will still check the ALEKS topics weekly, but it will be for extra credit.  I will only give 10 points per week so if they do more than 10, I will only put a 10 in the gradebook. If they don’t do any ALEKS it won’t count against them for those few weeks.  I will let you all know when I start counting ALEKS again as a grade and not just extra credit.

Please, please, please have students working on Study Island over the next month.  It can only help them review and do better on any testing.

I put in their Study Island Assignment #12 grades today.  If your child’s is missing, it’s only to remind them to work on it so that we can move onto the next assignment when we return.  It will not be counted as late, but does need to be done before we return from break.

Science News

We will be exploring light the week we return from break and then moving quickly to Sound.  We will also be doing Study Island lessons in Science to review topics from earlier in the year.  These will be going in the gradebook as classwork assignments. The SCPASS test for Science will be Tuesday, May 21st so we will only have 4 weeks when we return to review and learn.

The posters that were returned this week with the permission slips were delivered to the Richland County Conservation building today and we will find out in a few weeks if we have any winners.  I was very impressed with our entries so I am crossing my fingers that we will have a winner or two!

Math News

We have worked hard this week in taking the MAP math test and learning all about fractions.  Everyone did a great job on the MAP test. Almost everyone met their goal and even exceeded their goal.  There were a few that didn’t meet their goal, but they still showed growth from the Fall--so I am very proud of all of them!

We will take the Topic 12 test on Tuesday.  Students will review on Monday. Any extra practice this weekend will definitely help them.  The main thing they might need extra help with is simplifying fractions and changing between a mixed number and an improper fraction.

Remember, Study Island is a great resource for review of any and all math concepts.

Don’t forget to encourage your child to complete their ALEKS topics each week.  This is a great way to get up to 10 extra credit points each week.

Science News

We began our light unit this week with a lot of explorations.  Students were given many different items and some flashlights so that they could explore light.  We made some claims and wrote evidence for those claims. We will continue learning about light next week.

Those students who received a piece of poster board today for their final draft of the poster contest will need to have those to me no later than Tuesday of next week.  They will also need the entry form filled out and turned in with them. I will be mailing them or having them delivered on Wednesday.

Field Trip Information
We go on our trip to Charleston this coming Wednesday.  Students need to start arriving at about 6:10am. We have a 6:30 departure time so that we don’t miss the boat to Ft. Sumter.  All children must bring a bagged lunch from home. Please make sure to label everything. Students may want to bring a small bag with a book to read while on the bus.  They will leave them on the bus while we are in Charleston. Please--no electronics.  We will be back around 4:00 or 4:15.  Please let us know if you have any questions.
