Math News

We have been working hard with fractions this week.  We will be taking our next unit test on Topic 11 on Thursday of next week.  I have updated the gradebook and ask that you review your child’s grades this weekend.  If they are missing anything, please make sure that they turn in any missing work by Tuesday, which is the last day of the nine weeks.

Science News

Our plants are growing!  We are finishing up plants and animals and will take our unit test on Wednesday.  Study guides were given out today and we will go over them Monday and Tuesday.  If they know the material on the study guide, they will do great on their test.

Language Arts News

Will be updated on Monday.  This past week students have been reading an informational essay about the desert.  We learned that here is a stated main idea and sometimes there can be an unstated main idea based on the details gathered about a subject.  

March is Women’s History Month.  Next week students will read about the Women’s suffrage movement as they read “Women and the Vote.”
 
Please remind your student that reading logs are due on Wednesday. 5 points will be deducted from the grade for each day that the reading log is late unless the student is absent on the due date Students should have the reading logs in class everyday to show that they have completed reading homework.  Students cannot write just fiction or nonfiction as the genre.

Social Studies News
Will be updated on Monday.  In Social Studies next week we will continue to learn about westward expansion and Manifest Destiny.  Students are learning about Daniel Boone and other pioneers.  We will also engage student in an interactive learning experience about “Trails West.”

Fourth Grade News
Reading Logs for the Columbia Fireflies game tickets are due by Wednesday morning.  Please make sure to hit a homerun by reading this weekend!

We are using many computer programs in which the students need to be able to listen to what is said on the videos.  It is critical that each student have a set of working headphones or earbuds so that the computer volume does not disrupt the class.  PLEASE, PLEASE!  We need your child to have headphones or earbuds in class everyday. They have them at the Good Dollar next to the IGA for $2.  

Next Friday is an early dismissal day.  School will be dismissed at 11:30am.  If your child will go home a different way, please make sure to send a note.

Spring Break will be Monday, March 28th until Friday, April 1st.  We hope you have a great week!

Field Day is going to be Friday, April 8th.  If  you would like to volunteer, you may click on the link below to fill out a volunteer form.  They are looking for volunteers for the morning and afternoon.

Field Day Help Needed


If you would like to volunteer to help out at Field Day on Friday, April 8th, please fill out the form that your child brings home or go to:  http://vols.pt/xng9ms and complete the online form.  Shifts are from 8:30 - 11:30, 11:30 - 2:30, or the entire day.  Coach Johnson needs to know no later than Wednesday, April 6th if you can help.  Hope to see some of you there!

Columbia Fireflies and a Reading Log

We received some great news this morning!
Every student at BHE has an opportunity to win a free ticket to see the new Columbia Fireflies baseball team! 


Each student has been given a reading log.  They need to read 20 minutes a day for 8 days.  They must have an adult initial after each 20 minutes.  When they have completed this reading log, they need to bring them back to school and we will turn them into Mrs. Jeffers.

In return they will receive

  •   a ticket to the Columbia Fireflies game on Monday, April 18th (this will be BHE night at the ball field)
  • a voucher for a hot dog dinner while at the game
  • a free ticket to EdVenture Children's Museum!! 
 The reading logs must be completed and returned to school no later than Tuesday, March 22nd.  We can't wait to see you all at the ball game!

Math News

We have started our unit on Fractions.  This week we did our lessons using Zearn as our guide.  Next week we will go back to the Pearson textbook and use the Zearn lessons as extra practice.  The next ALEKS grade will include this week and next week so if your child did not get their 5 topics this week, don’t worry because we will get them done next week.  We will also use our Zearn lessons as grades since we will be doing them in class.  Our next topic test will be either March 23rd or March 24th.

Spirit Day is next Friday, March 18th.  The Spirit Store will be open for the 3rd-5th graders at 7:30a.m.  They sell headphones now!

Fundraiser money is due by Tuesday, March 15th.  Money raised will go towards a memorial garden in honor of Mrs. Peake.  Money needs to be collected as they sell so that all money is turned in by the 15th.

Math News

We finished our Geometry unit this week and tested yesterday.  Those papers will go home next week.  We had a fun time with a symmetry art project today.  These projects will be displayed in the hall next week.  I will post a picture of the final wall display once it is in the hall.

We will begin our Fraction unit next week.  We won’t always be using the Pearson book for this unit.  We will be using the Zearn computer program and a lot of hands on activities in the class.  Please make sure your child keeps their math papers in their red folder so that they will not lose them since it is not going to always be work in their math workbook.

Science News

We had some amazing projects presented this week!  The students really learned their stuff and did a great job presenting their information to the class.  Next week we will begin learning about plants.

Language Arts News

The next reading we will read “A Walk in the Desert, an expository writing in Treasures.  The reading skills covered are summarizing the main idea using details.  Students will also complete an expository writing on “Why we need the Constitution.”

Social Studies News
In Social Studies next week we will begin to look west to see how the United States grew. Students will learn about President Thomas Jefferson, the Louisiana Purchase and and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  Students are also reading a historical fiction book on Daniel Boone to learn about pioneers.

Fourth Grade News

We will be taking the MAP tests this next week.  We are scheduled to take the ELA test on Tuesday morning after related arts and the Math test on Friday morning after related arts.  Please make sure your child is here and on time on those days.

PLEASE, PLEASE!  We need your child to have headphones or earbuds in class everyday. We use them every day.  They also need them every time we go to the computer lab.  Please make sure your child brings them to school everyday.  

The school fundraiser began this week.  It will continue through March 15th.  As your child sells items, they can bring in the coupon with your signature and it will be redeemed for a “Space Buddy.”  They only have to sell 2 items to get their first buddy.  They will receive 1 space buddy for every 3 items they sell after the first two.  Money raised will go towards a memorial garden in honor of Mrs. Peake.  Money needs to be collected as they sell so that all money is turned in by the 15th.

Mrs. Benson's Class is Class of the Week

Mrs. Benson's homeroom class was named Class of the Week!


BHE Spring Fundraiser is underway

Did you see your child's Spring Fundraiser folder?  It is packed full of wonderful items that your child can sell.  Students can collect these really fun Space Monkeys for their lanyards by selling items.  You must send in the coupon as your child sells with your signature.  Monkeys are in our boxes by the end of the day.  Money from this fundraiser will help to rebuild our garden in memory of Mrs. Peake.  Thanks for your help with this fundraiser.
