Math News

We finished topic 4 this week and are ready to move on to multiplication.  We will be learning different strategies to multiply multiple digit numbers by one-digit numbers.  We will most likely take the topic 5 test on Wednesday, November 7th. This will be after we are off for Election day, but students will have all the tools to study with and should use that extra time to review for the test.

I sent all graded papers home this past week.  Thank you for quickly returning the papers letting me know you had reviewed them.  I will try and do this about once every two weeks so that you can see your child’s work and not just the grade in PowerSchool.

Don’t forget to check out the Google Classroom “live” calendar.  It is up to date with all tests and/or assignments. Just in case you’re having trouble getting into Google classroom, try this link to see the calendar.

Please  have your students complete at least 5 ALEKS topics each week.  If your child forgets their ALEKS username and password, please let me know.  It is taped in their math journal, but I can look it up and send it by email to you so you can have it too.  I am allowing them to get a maximum of 10 bonus points each week.  This means that they can do 15 topics a week and receive their 5 points for a 100% and then 10 points for extra credit.

Science News

Next week we will be reviewing all of our weather concepts from the entire 1st nine weeks.  I will be giving out a study guide on Monday for students to complete. We will complete and go over in class and review each day.  The Final Weather test will be on Thursday, November 1st. I will also take up Science journals on Friday of next week for a journal grade.  Please encourage your child to study each night for the science test. The information will come from their science textbook and their science journal.

READING LOGS
Reading logs are assigned every week. Students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes and then respond to their reading using the question bank provided in their binder for fiction and nonfiction books. Your child is only required to answer one question a night on the reading response sheet provided. Please check weekly - if not every night - to make sure that your child is completing this task.

READING
Next week, we will continue to focus our attention on Main Idea and Theme. The theme is the lesson or message that the writer wants to get across in his or her story that can be applied to our everyday life - we call it THE MEssage (think about how it can be applied to me). As we learn about theme, we will read a few familiar pieces of literature - folktales such as The Ant and the Grasshopper, King Midas and the Golden Touch, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf just to name a few.

Social Studies News
This week students took a social studies assessment on our first major unit - The First Americans (Geography, Land Bridge Theory, and Native American Cultural Groupings). Yes indeed, it did take us a while to get through this unit - but I definitely didn’t want to rush it as it was a lot of information to consume! The following students made it into Ms. A.B.’s A/B Club!

Aubriana's A Club
Bodrick’s B Club
Ayanna Mazique - Highest Grade
Alijah Wilson
Parker Robinson
Jaylen Scott
Ty’Shaun Williams
Jobe Blair
Carolina Pettway

Math News

We have been working on addition and subtraction this week with large numbers.  We learned a few new strategies that we can use to help if we need them. We also learned about subtracting with a lot of zeros in our largest number.  Ask your child if they can teach you the “magic hat trick”. We will take a test on Topic 4 this next Wednesday.

I extended the math stations due date until next Friday.  This will have given every one 4 weeks to complete their 10 stations in class.  Please check with your child and see if they are close to finishing so that everyone will be ready to turn them in next Friday.

All graded Math 4 Today quizzes and unit tests will be sent home next week for you to keep.  Although the grades have been in the gradebook for you to see, I would like you to look through them and see any comments I might have made for the student.  I will have a paper attached to the front of the stack of papers for you to sign and return so that I know you have seen them all. Please return this paper within 2 days of my sending them home.  I will try and have them ready to come home on Tuesday.

The Google Classroom “live” calendar is up to date with all tests and/or assignments.

Don’t forget to have your students complete at least 5 ALEKS topics each week.  If your child forgets their ALEKS username and password, please let me know. It is taped in their math journal, but I can look it up and send it by email to you so you can have it too.  I will be allowing them to get a maximum of 10 bonus points each week starting next week. This means that they can do 15 topics a week and receive their 5 points for a 100% and then 10 points for extra credit.

Science News

We will be working on our severe weather reports next week.  Students will be given a guide to use on Monday for these reports.  I have attached a version of this below so that you can see what students are completing.  This will count as a major grade and be due no later than Friday. Students will be given time in class each day next week to work, but if by Wednesday they are not close enough to a finished project, they may need to work at home.  I will send an email out on Wednesday to those who need to work some at home.

We will also be finishing up our weather unit the last week of the month and taking a weather unit test on Thursday, November 1st.  A study guide will be given by the end of next week so that students can prepare. We will review for several days before the test.

Next week, we will focus our attention on Main Idea and Theme and being able to decipher between the two - which are very different. The main idea is what the text  is mostly about. The theme is the lesson or message that the writer wants to get across in his or her story that can be applied to our everyday life - we call it THE MEssage (think about how it can be applied to me). Social Studies News
Next week, students will complete a fun project to show their learning of Native American cultural regions! They will be making snow globes on Monday and Tuesday and will need to choose one region to write a paragraph about and draw an illustration. Instructions were given today, October 19th. Some students may already have their snow globe template. Tentative test date is Wednesday, October 24, 2018. Make sure your child is referring to the Tribes at a Glance Chart, notepages in their binders and the full presentation that has been posted in the Social Studies Google Classroom that has some video links. There are also some additional resources in Google Classroom they can use as well. All parents have been invited/have access to Google Classroom.

Graded Native Americans review was given today - students knew about since Monday. Grades have been put in gradebook and papers have been returned so students can study. Students will have the opportunity to earn extra points on this assignment on next Wednesday’s test if the did poorly. Use the PowerPoint in Google Classroom to check answers.

READING
This week students were assessed online via Quizizz on our Treasures selection Mystic Horse and understanding of homophones (which were encountered in the text) - and I must say that most did very well! Grades are already in PowerSchool and I am currently finishing up scores for the text-dependent questions students answered in Google Classroom.

Next week, we will finish learning about the final Native American Cultural Group of the United States - the Pacific Northwest. After Monday/Tuesday, the rest of the week will be devoted to review of all five regions. Students will complete a fun project to show their learning by the end of the week (hopefully)! Tentative test date is Wednesday, October 24, 2018. Make sure your child is referring to the Tribes at a Glance Chart and notepages in their binders and the full presentation that will be posted in the Google Classroom next week that has some video links. I also have books in the classroom on natives of these specific regions that they can read in class, or bring home to read/review with you.

RAP Questions did not go home this week due to us being out because of weather; however, they will go out next week. RAP questions are grade boosters and in order to receive full credit, they should be answered in complete sentences. Students can use any social studies resource to complete this assignment.
