Math News

This week we focused on getting ready for the MAP test!  Everyone did great!  I could tell that they were focused and trying really hard to work the more difficult problems.  I sent home signed papers Thursday that had their scores from the MAP tests attached to the top.  Many met their goals and some were very close.  I told them it gives them something to continue working on.  They can always do ALEKS and Study Island to help improve their future standardized test scores and MAP for the beginning of next year.

Next week I will start grading ALEKS topics again.  Students should be completing a minimum of 10 topics a week.  Please encourage your child to work hard at school to finish them and if they don’t please allow them to work at home.  I am trying to get them ready for 5th grade this last nine weeks.  In 5th grade, they will be required to master 10 topics a week as part of their grade.

This next week we will continue to discuss multiplying fractions.  For example, ⅓ of 9 is 3 and ½ of 10 is 5.  We will also learn ⅔ of 12 = 8.  We will also break a fraction down into a multiplication sentence using a unit fraction.  For example:  ⅔ = 2 x ⅓ ; ¾ = 3 x ¼
We will have another quiz on Friday that is formatted like the homework.  Please continue to encourage your child to complete their homework.  We will do problems similar to homework each day for our problems of the day so that students are ready for the quiz on Friday.  This is cumulative review--nothing new.

Science News

We finished up Chapter 4 this week and will be moving on to Chapter 5 next week.  We will discuss animal adaptations and habitats.  We were able to start incubating 24 eggs on Tuesday.  They should be hatching (if we did everything right) the week before spring break.  They take 21 days to incubate.  We will candle them today or Monday to see which ones were fertilized and have started to grow!

Language Arts News.

Students will be doing in depth word studies for the next week.  We will be working on writing sentences, paragraphs, small essays, and stories.   Students will continue with weekly spelling words.  Please make sure that you encourage your child to 1) Read every night for at least 25 minutes and 2)  Study their spelling words.

Homework is required to be written down each day in their agendas.  Please check to see that your child has done this and accomplished their assignments.  Together we can help our students grow to be responsible students.  Middle School is right around the corner!

On a personal note, I would like to thank you parents for your patience and support of me as I have endeavored to merge back into the classroom.  I am a retired teacher and my last 11 years were in middle school Science.  I taught elementary for 19 years, but many things have changed.  Our students are wonderful but no matter how wonderful, they are still children and need guidance.  Thank you again for your patience.

Social Studies News

We are finishing Unit 6.  We will be working on Social studies standards next instead of going through the book.  Some material in the book is appropriate for what our students must learn, but some is not.  I will try to have updates for parents weekly on what we have learned and where we are going.
