Weekly News--April 21st

Benson/Cave(Browne) News
News from the 4th Grade

April 21, 2017

Math News

We have been working hard on finishing up our decimal unit.  Many students are taking their Objective 3 quick check which will be a test grade.  If they haven’t taken it by the end of class, they will take it on Monday.  By Wednesday of next week, students will take a quiz on money and we will then begin our review of all 4th grade standards.  Please continue to encourage your child to complete homework because it is a review of 4th grade that will prepare them for standardized testing.  (Dates are below in the Fourth Grade News section).

ALEKS can be worked on at home.  ALEKS topics are being graded again.  Students should be completing a minimum of 10 topics a week.  I am trying to get them ready for 5th grade this last nine weeks.  In 5th grade, they will be required to master 10 topics a week as part of their grade.

Science News

We finished up our animal unit this week!  Next week we will begin discussing Light and Sound, which is chapter 1 in the textbook.

Language Arts News.

Students have been working on writing “Masterful” sentences.  These are sentences that have adjectives and adverbs, descriptive words and others that make sentences more informative and easy to read. We have also been working on Homonyms and Author’s perspective.  Students read a short story entitled, “Mouse and Crow” this week. They learned what personification is and also repetition.  We will review these early next week and move on to more skills as we try to review and learn as much as we can in our last few weeks!
Please encourage your child to read for 20+ minutes everyday and also to complete homework assigned each day.

Social Studies News

We have completed our unit of study on our six important Founding Fathers or leaders of early America.  Students have done very well.  Next week we will move on the the “Westward Expansion” and then the Civil War!  :)  Again, please encourage your child to complete any work sent home for homework.  Assignments are supposed to be written in their agendas daily and team leaders check this daily.  Thanks!  We are in need on paper and colored pencils to finish out the school year.  Please send some if you can!  Thank you!

Fourth Grade News

The Spring Concert, featuring the chorus and steel drums, will perform Tuesday, April 25th at 6pm.  We hope to see many of you out supporting the fine arts here at BHE.

Next Friday, April 28th is Spirit Day.  Please help your child remember their BHE spirit wear.

Minis for Moms will be on Friday, May 5th at 8am.

Our PTO sponsored Spring Carnival will be held on Friday, May 12th from 5-7pm.  We hope you can bring your family out to this fun event.  There will be bouncy houses, a raffle, games, food, and lots of fun!

State standardized testing will be on Tuesday, May 16th, Wednesday, May 17th, Thursday, May 18th, Tuesday, May 23rd, and Wednesday, May 24th.  Please try not to schedule any appointments on these days so that students will be here for their scheduled test day.  Students perform better in their normal testing environment instead of a make-up testing environment.

4th Grade promotion ceremony will be on Thursday, May 25th at 1pm.  Students will be recognized for honor roll, perfect attendance, and club participation.  I will send out emails closer to that time to individuals whose child will be receiving recognition since all students will not be recognized at that ceremony.  Of course, all are welcome to attend.

Monday, May 29th is Memorial Day--there will be no school.

Wednesday, May 31st and Thursday, June 1st are both early dismissal day.  We will be dismissing at 11:30am.  June 1st is the last day of school.
