Weekly News--May 5th

Language Arts and Social Studies will be updated on Monday.

Math News

We had a fun time reviewing place value, rounding, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division this week.  We are going to focus on geometry, measurement, and fractions next week.  Please make sure your child is doing their homework packet for a spiral review of all of the 4th grade topics we have covered this year.

Starting  next week, I will not be grading ALEKS.  We are going to be focusing our review by using Study Island.  I strongly encourage students to work in Study Island as often as they can as we are leading up to the SC Ready Testing.  The lessons in Study Island are directly correlated with SC Standards and will help students prepare for the test.

Science News

This week we finished up our discussions on light and took a unit test Thursday.  We will be discussing sound next week with a culminating test on Friday.  Students will be able to use their textbooks.  A portion of the test will also cover the vocabulary words from all of Chapter 1.  These words will be in a quizlet by Monday for students to study.

Language Arts News.

This week students have been working on writing fictional stories.  It is a process.  They have made story maps, rough drafts, and proofread each other’s work to this point.  Next week, we will be polishing our writings and making final copies.
We have also been working on the main idea, supporting details and finding important facts in short passages of writing.
Please encourage your child to read for 20+ minutes everyday and also to complete homework assigned each day.

Social Studies News

We have been working this week on Unit 7, chapters 1 and 2.  We are working on the Westward Expansion.  We will continue to work on Unit 7 for the next two weeks.  Please encourage your child to read their books at home and study each lesson as we go.  Thank you!

Fourth Grade News

Journey Picture packages came home last week.  These are packages that chronicle the growth of your child through the school years.  If your child has been here for 3 or more years, you will see all pictures.  If your child has been here less than 3 years, there are some special “Fun Variety” pictures you can choose to purchase.  If you want to purchase, please return payment by May 12th.  If you do not wish to purchase any of the pictures, please return as soon as possible.  Also, if you still have the Spring Pictures at home somewhere, you can return them along with this new package.

Our PTO sponsored Spring Carnival will be held on Friday, May 12th from 5-7pm.  We hope you can bring your family out to this fun event.  There will be bouncy houses, a raffle, games, food, and lots of fun!

State standardized testing will be on Tuesday, May 16th, Wednesday, May 17th, Thursday, May 18th, Tuesday, May 23rd, and Wednesday, May 24th.  Please try not to schedule any appointments on these days so that students will be here for their scheduled test day.  Students perform better in their normal testing environment instead of a make-up testing environment.

4th Grade promotion ceremony will be on Thursday, May 25th at 1pm.  Students will be recognized for honor roll, perfect attendance, and club participation.  I will send out emails closer to that time to individuals whose child will be receiving recognition since all students will not be recognized at that ceremony.  Of course, all are welcome to attend.

Monday, May 29th is Memorial Day--there will be no school.

Wednesday, May 31st and Thursday, June 1st are both early dismissal day.  We will be dismissing at 11:30am.  June 1st is the last day of school.
