Math News

This week we focused on decimals and fractions some more.  We will be focusing on a different strand in math each week up until our standardized testing in May.  Next week we will review our measurement and data analysis strand. Students will be playing review games and completing Study Island lessons to help them review their measurement.  We will end the week with a fun “Escape Classroom” measurement review and a quiz.

Homework packets will go home next week.  Please encourage your child to complete their homework because these are wonderful reviews of the year.  They will remind students of things previously learned and help them to do well in May on their standardized test.

Please have your child practice their multiplication facts.  There are many games on www.multiplication.com that they would love to play that will help them.

If you still need to join Seesaw, please click here and follow the directions.

Science News

We started discussing Light this week.  We will be focusing on Light for a few weeks and then working on Sound before the end of May.  We will discuss how light reflects, refracts, and bends. We will get the prisms out next week and see how light separates into the rainbow.

WRITING BOOTCAMP
This week’s writing bootcamp was centered around our trip to Charleston, SC as students began the week by responding to a text dependent analysis using the passage “My Trip to the City Aquarium”.
Class began writing on their own with no help and as the week went on, we completed the entire writing process together. Students were able to see what mistakes they made and add tools to their toolbox that will help them with things they could have done better. Please click on the link to see the full writing process - organizing of ideas on T-Chart and essay in its entirety: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MpkUqYzufwvu3aKKmBH04-qJHVhZ36-uXhGEr5X1zaE/edit?usp=sharing - what you see is the expectation for all students. It is critical that students complete an organizer which will help with analysis and essays must have an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Next week, we will do writing bootcamp all over again with two new pieces of text entitled “The Greedy Dog” and “The Man and the Golden Fish”! Students will love these selections as they are very similar to one of their favorites, “The Fisherman and His Wife”. I can’t wait to see how students progress and continue to grow over the course of the rest of these final weeks before testing!

Special shout out the following Lexia Core 5 Completers!
  • Emily Lancaster
  • Thomas Bozard
The following students are almost there! Keep pushing:
Otis Barlow, Daija Caldwell, Liana Adams, Caroline Goff, Jake Gonzales, Emerson Ramsdale, Darius Gatewood-White and Libby Lee

Social Studies News

Next week, we will continue to learn about the makings of our nation’s government and Constitution by which it is outlined. We will review the Articles of Confederation and its apparent weaknesses and and talk about how the U.S. Constitution is different and much stronger. We will learn about the Bill of Rights, the three branches of government, and the Constitution's amendments. Students may use the links in Google Classroom, along with following resources to learn/explore more about this topic.
