Math News

We have worked very hard this week on Topic 13.  We have converted fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions.  We will finish topic 13 on Monday, review on Tuesday, and take the topic test on Wednesday, May 1st.  Thursday and Friday we will review measurement--both customary and metric.

Study Island is crucial at this point.  Students are working on Study Island lessons during RTI time instead of ALEKS for the next couple of weeks.  This means that there will be 2 assignments each week. Students will need to work efficiently on these assignments.  I have found in the past that students wait until the last day to work on them. Please encourage your child to start on day 1 of the assignment so that they don’t fall behind.  Next week students will have assignments #15 and #16.

If students finish their Study Island lessons, they can do ALEKS for extra credit.  Until testing is complete, ALEKS will be for extra credit. I will only give 10 points per week so if they do more than 10, I will only put a 10 in the gradebook.  If they don’t do any ALEKS it won’t count against them for those few weeks.

Please, please, please have students working on Study Island over the next month.  It can only help them review and do better on any testing.

Science News

We have had a fun week of exploring light.  We have explored white light (the visible spectrum), refraction, transparent, translucent, and opaque.  Next week we will start discussing sound. We will have some type of graded assignment next week--more details to come.

Students did several creative assignments in their journals this week.  We wrote a postcard to “white light” telling it how much we appreciated it and what it meant to have white light in our life.  We drew a cartoon about refraction. Today we designed an ad that was advertising a transparent object. Please ask your child to see their creative works!

We heard back from Richland County this week and we have 2 winners!  Gabi won 3rd place in our division and Lilly won an honorable mention.  Congratulations girls!!! I am so proud of all of my students for their wonderful art that was turned in!
