Math News

We continued to work on place value this week.  Each student is doing great at going through their checklist and working each activity.  We have really learned how manage our time and everyone is through with objective 1--which was the longest objective on the checklist.  Many students are finishing objective 2 and moving along.  The hope is to be completed with objective 4 by Thursday or Friday at the latest and then have a culminating unit test at the beginning of the following week.

Don’t forget--homework will be given each Monday and will not be due until Friday.  Students are to complete the entire packet for credit.  If your child is sick or misses school, they should still be able to complete the packet because it is only 3 sheets.  If your child leaves it at home and does not bring it on Friday, it will not be accepted on Monday.  The only time it will be accepted on a Monday will be when the child is not at school on Friday.  If homework is not turned in by Friday of each week, 5 points will be deducted off of their nine weeks homework grade.

Science News
We finished up Lesson 1 on the water cycle today.  We took a quiz in a Google form on Wednesday.  The scores were not what I had hoped, therefore I did offer them a paper copy make up to complete on Thursday.  We reviewed all of the questions before giving the retake and had a great discussion.  If your child got all of the questions correct on the retake, their score will be an 85.  This is much better than their first score, but still fair for the ones who did well the first time taking the quiz.  These quizzes will go home on Thursday for you to see, sign, and return.

We will begin Lesson 2 on weather next week.  We will be able to discuss the tropical storm at that time and keep track of the weather using our weather station just outside of our classroom.

Language Arts News
In ELA next week we will read “Mystic Horse,”a Native American legend in the Treasures textbook. Students will analyze the story to identify the plot and the sequence of events in the reading selection.  We will continue to focus on making inferences.  There will be a quiz on this selection later in the week.

Students have a great opportunity to display their writings about their grandparents that we have been working on in class.  They can also submit their essay about the grandparent for the Greatest Grandparent essay.  All students took a copy of the contest rules home on Thursday with their graded papers.  Students who plan to participate in the contest need to return the entry form by Wednesday with the information about their grandparent at the top of the form completed.  The essay will be written on the form in class.

Social Studies News
This week in Social Studies we began learning about the Land Bridge Theory to summarize how the first people came to the Americas from Asia.. On Wednesday, students will have a quiz on the Land Bridge Theory.  We will also learn about five Native American groups that thrived in North America beginning with Native Americans of the Southwest.

Fourth Grade News

We had our fundraiser kick off on Thursday and students are pumped up about selling Yankee Candles.  Your child should have come home with a packet of information.  These are due by Thursday, September 15th.  There is no tax on the items purchased.  We would love to have as many of you participate as possible because it brings funds straight back to our classroom for supplies.  The PTO is also using a good portion of the money for technology needs at BHE.  Have fun selling some candles and helping our school.

We enjoyed meeting many of you at Open House this past week.  At that time we shared information about the curriculum and procedures.  Here is a link that will allow you to view the slideshow that was presented.  Open House SlideShow

There will be no school on Monday, September 5th in observance of Labor Day.

Grandparent’s Breakfast will be on Friday, September 9th.  Forms were sent home the first week of school and RSVPs were returned.  We look forward to seeing many grandparents that morning.

Picture Day will be on September 13th.  This is the picture for the yearbook.  SMILE!

Interims will be available on Parent Portal on Thursday, September 15th.  Make sure to log in that day and check on your child’s grades.

Friday, September 16th is the first Spirit Store for 3rd through 5th grades.  It will be open starting at 7:30am in the cafeteria.  Your child may bring money and shop before coming to class that day.

Thursday, September 22nd is an early release day.  Students will be dismissed starting at 11:30am.  If your child will be going home a different way, please let us know.  We will be having conferences that afternoon.  Here is a link to sign up for a time slot.  If there are none available and you really need to see us sooner than later, please email and let us know.  Thanks.  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409054cadab2aa13-confernces  More times have been added that include before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
