Math News

We will begin our next math unit on Monday.  We will be studying measurement--customary units, metric units, elapsed time, and money.  We should be working on this unit for about 2 weeks.  If your child is absent or feels that they need more time to work on their checklist, they are always welcome to access it in Google classroom and work at home.  All quick checks will need to be taken at school.

A homework packet will be given out on Monday and will be due no later than Friday.  Students can also use ALEKS to practice at home if they would like.  They will need to get their username from me before they log in the first time.  This is a great computer program that helps to review all math concepts.

Science News

This next week we will be working on Lesson 4 in Chapter 2 of our science book.  This will cover hurricanes, tornadoes, and thunderstorms.

Language Arts News
In ELA this week students were given an opportunity to share their “Hurricane Matthew Experience” in a writing assignment using “Step Up to Writing”  this is a writing process that is used in Richland 2.  Students had an opportunity to create a pre-write for this assignment.  Next week student will complete this writing assignment.

Next Week in ELA students will read a leveled reader associated with the story  “The Astronaut and the Onion”  and continue to focus on character traits and story elements. After practicing the skills( long i, complex sentences) and vocabulary, students will complete a cold read test later in the week.

Recently students were given their reading range,  There are many times during the ELA period and school day for students to read independently.  Students will be expected to read at least 2 books per week using  the Big Universe Online Reading Program with the following filters -quiz concept, key ideas and details’; then select a book to read with their reading range using the ATOS (on selected books).

Social Studies News
Next week in Social Studies we will review  Spanish Explorers and then learn about French and Dutch explorers. This will conclude our study of explorers.  There will be an end of the unit project on explorers where students will create explorer cards for one group of European Explorers.  Students will bring home a letter that will give you more information on this project. Please check your child’s agenda daily for assignments and announcements.
