Math News

This week we worked together on place value.  We practiced reading and writing numbers up to the hundred millions.  We wrote numbers in standard form, word form, unit form, and expanded form.  We even posted some work in SeeSaw.  Please see below for information on how to join our SeeSaw classroom and be able to see some of your child’s math and science work.  SeeSaw is a great way to get a glimpse of what is going on in the classroom.  It is private and you will only be able to see posts that are created by your child.

How to join SeeSaw:
Ms. Bodrick’s homeroom will need to use this link:  https://app.seesaw.me/s/500-822-733
Mrs. Benson’s homeroom will need to use this link:  https://app.seesaw.me/s/316-243-151
Once you have clicked on the correct link above, please follow these steps.
  1. Choose your child from the list
  2. Create your account
  3. Once I approve you, you can see content from your child
After you sign up, download the free Seesaw Family app and sign in. You can also access Seesaw from a computer at https://app.seesaw.me.
Next week we will continue to work on our checklist for place value.  Now that routines are established, students should be able to work independently and accomplish many things on their checklist each day.  This checklist is in their Google classroom.  I will send out invites soon so that you may log in and see this checklist each unit.

Homework packets will be given out on Tuesday next week and will be due--completed-- by Friday.

Mrs. Benson had a project funded last spring through DonorsChoose.org.  The project was so that our class could have its own mini iPads to complete multi-media projects.  Unfortunately, the prices of the iPads went up and therefore only one iPad will be able to be purchased.  However, there is a silver lining!  DonorsChoose has made it possible for “gift cards” to be issued to Mrs. Benson’s account so that when enough funds are earned, another iPad may be purchased.  If you or your company would like to donate, please click this link:  https://www.donorschoose.org/SBenson
We have already had $140 donated since last week!  Thanks so much for your donations!

Science News

This week we learned about the water cycle.  We created our own water cycle in the classroom on our window and students were able to see the condensation on the ziploc bag.  We completed a water cycle scavenger hunt around the classroom to learn facts and then used that information to make a flip book about the water cycle.  We will most likely have a quiz on the water cycle on Thursday or Friday of next week.

ELA News
This week students began practicing strategies that good readers use as we read Because of  Winn Dixie. A handout entitled “What Good Readers Do” was given to each child and is in their binder. Please use it as a reference guide when you are reading with your child in the evenings. Next week will we be responding to the literature we read and focus on common prefixes and suffixes. A chart was also provided that students should study over the long weekend.
What you can do at home to help your child be successful:
  • Encourage Nightly Reading
  • Discuss What Your Child is Reading and help them complete weekly Reading Logs which are due each Friday
  • Find Reasons to Write outside of the Classroom
  • Play Educational Games/Watch Educational Videos - LEXIA can be used at home

Social Studies News

Please make sure your child has a composition notebook for Social Studies. Journals will be interactive and used frequently. We began setting them up this week and they are housed in the classroom. If you want your child to bring their journal home, please let me know.
A parent study guide will still be provided to you as soon as I’m able to go over it with students.

We will be MAP testing on Wednesday, September 6th and Thursday, September 14th.  Please make sure your child is at school on time these days.  We will begin testing after homeroom.
