Math News

This week we discussed the place value system and how each place is 10 times more than the next.  For example, 100 is 10 times more than 10.  We also continued reading and writing numbers in standard form, unit form, word form, and expanded form.  Students worked on their checklist each day as well.  Students should be finished with Objective 1 by now and you will see their Objective 1 classwork grade in Parent Portal.  If it is not there, your child needs to finish Objective 1 work over the weekend so they can begin Objective 2 Monday.  We tentatively have our place value unit test scheduled for Tuesday, September 19th.  All four objectives for this unit should be finished by then.  Their checklist is in their Google classroom for Math.

Don’t forget to join Seesaw so that you can see some of your child’s work that doesn’t get brought home.  I will try to add pictures along the way too of activities that we might complete.  We got our first iPad this week that will make taking those pictures a lot easier. (We could always use another iPad or two in the room.   If you or your company would like to donate, please click this link:  https://www.donorschoose.org/SBenson
We have already had $140 donated since last week!  Thanks so much for your donations!)

Science News

We finished talking about the water cycle this week and took our first quiz.  It was a Google form so students immediately knew their score.  These were not as good as I expected.  I will upload them into Parent Portal, but please don’t stress when you see a low score.  I will help them improve their score next week.  (I want them to see it first and we are going to talk about how one grade can affect their average.)  Next Friday their average should be better than it will be when I upload these scores.

Next week we will begin Lesson 2:  What is Weather?  This lesson will discuss the job of a meteorologist and what tools are used to measure weather.  With the current weather forecast, your child might have a lot of questions.  This is a great time to allow them to watch the weather on the news and make predictions.

ELA News
Today students took their first reading test on the textbook selection - Because of Winn-Dixie. Although we are finished with the excerpt, I have been reading and will continue to read the actual chapter book as my daily read aloud.
Next week in ELA, we will continue working with Because of Winn Dixie as we begin tackling a Text Dependent Analysis. For those wondering, “What is a text dependent analysis?” - wonder no further!
A TDA is a question that forces students to synthesize answers based on specific evidence within a reading passage and demonstrate their ability to interpret the meaning behind that evidence.

What you can do at home to help your child be successful:
  • Encourage Nightly Reading
  • Discuss What Your Child is Reading and help them complete weekly Reading Logs which are due each Friday
  • Find Reasons to Write outside of the Classroom
  • Play Educational Games/Watch Educational Videos - LEXIA can be used at home

Social Studies News

Next Week’s Indicators 4-1.1 Summarize the spread of Native American populations using the Land Bridge Theory. 4-1.2 Compare the everyday life, physical environment, and culture of the major Native American cultural groupings, including the Eastern Woodlands, the Plains, the Southwest, the Great Basin, and the Pacific Northwest.

Homework: Native American KWL - What does your child already know about Native Americans based on previous learning experiences or even personal experiences? What would they like to know?

*Refer to Google Classroom for presentations throughout the week. Students will be informed when they have posted. Students login to Google classroom at home using their Gmail account.
