Math News

We worked very hard and finished Unit 3 this week.  We took our test on Wednesday (grades are in Parent Portal) and I was very pleased with the grades.  I can tell that many students really studied and learned a lot!

We are beginning our next unit in Math on Monday.  It will be a Measurement unit.  Our 3 objectives are:
Objective 1:  I can convert and explain the size of customary units. (lb, oz, inches, feet, yards, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons).
Objective 2:  I can convert and explain the size of metric units. (mm, cm, m, km, kg, g, km, m, L, kL).
Objective 3:  I can solve word problems involving intervals of time and money.

This will take about 2 weeks.  I will discuss daily the pacing for the students so that they will not fall behind.  The test date will be sent home next week after we get a start in the unit.
Homework packets will be sent home Monday.  They are to be completed by Friday.  Students also need to master at least 5 topics in ALEKS during the week.  If for some reason, they have not mastered them by Friday, students can (and are encouraged) to finish over the weekend.  I don’t run my report until Monday morning.
If you still need to join Seesaw, please click here and follow the directions.

Science News

We talked about climate vs. weather this week.  Ask your child to tell you the difference between the two.  I will be creating a weather unit test and study guide this weekend.  I will give these study guides out on Monday.  The test will be given on Thursday.  We will review all week with some fun games.  Please encourage your child to study so that they will be successful on the test.

If your child has finished their video and/or weather report, they are uploaded into Seesaw.  I have enjoyed watching them and really seeing some personalities come out through the camera.  I hope you enjoy their hard work.  If you come by the room, there are some QR codes on the bulletin board for you to view some other presentations also.

Our next unit will be Space.  We will begin this unit next Friday.

ELA News
Next week we will focus on understanding theme in literary texts. We will read a number of folktales, fables, and myths over the course of the week and practice with the Text Dependent Analysis. Our word focus will be on irregular plurals (words that end in y, f; words that change spelling completely, etc.)

File:New.gif - Wikimedia CommonsSomething NEW is coming your child’s way with their reading log! Next week will be the final week in which the paper reading log will be used. Students will receive further information about these changes - TECHNOLOGY will be involved!

What you can do at home to help your child be successful:
  • Discuss What Your Child is Reading and help them complete weekly Reading Logs which are due each Friday
  • Find Reasons to Write outside of the Classroom
  • Play Educational Games/Watch Educational Videos - LEXIA and STUDY ISLAND can be used at home

Social Studies News

File:Le-griffon.jpg - Wikimedia CommonsNext Week’s Indicators 4-1.3 Explain the political, economic, and technological factors that led to the exploration of the new world by Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, and England, including the competition between nations, the expansion of international trade, and the technological advances in shipbuilding and navigation. 4-1.4 Summarize the accomplishments of the Vikings and the Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French explorers, including Leif Eriksson, Columbus, Hernando de Soto, Magellan, Henry Hudson, John Cabot, and La Salle.

Social Studies test grades have been put into parent portal. I will send graded papers home by mid-week next week so you can see exactly what your child did.

Remember:
  • Students can access Google Classroom at home. All presentations and special links are posted there as references. Students may use these references when studying and completing weekly RAP questions. Some links are interactive games and videos!
  • RAP Questions are assigned every Thursday and it is highly encouraged that students use notes to complete. Social Studies journals will come home on Thursday.
  • A parent study guide has been issued for your personal use (so you can help your child if for some reason they are missing information or you aren’t exactly abreast on your history!)
