Math News

This week we have worked with decimals and fractions.  We now know that if you can make a fraction equivalent with a denominator of 10 or 100, you can easily convert to a decimal.  We also learned that knowing a little about money also helps with decimals. For example, because we know that 1 quarter is 25 cents, ¼ is equal to 0.25 and because 3 quarters is 75 cents, ¾ is equal to 0.75.

We will take the topic 13 test on Wednesday of next week so that we can start a new unit after spring break.  Please have your child practice with decimals and fractions over the weekend and next week. There will be no homework packet next week, so working on ALEKS nightly will help them with their test.  They can work on their decimal and fraction topics.

Please have your child practice their multiplication facts.  There are many games on www.multiplication.com that they would love to play that will help them.  Some of our classmates competed in Mr. Saxon’s March Madness Multiplication Game.  Congratulations to the Multiplication Tug Strikers and The Fast and Furious 4 for making it to the semi-finals.  They fought hard, but unfortunately didn’t make it to the finals.  Congratulations on a great competition!

Science News

This week we worked on our Organism projects.  Students completed a 4 slide presentation about an organism of their choosing.  These projects have been uploaded into Seesaw if they are finished. We started sharing them today in class and will continue sharing on Monday.  If you haven’t seen it in Seesaw, they need to upload it by Monday--it is the last day of the nine weeks.

They have also been working on 3 lessons in Study Island on organisms.  They must have these 3 lessons completed by the end of class on Monday.  I will average their best scores for each lesson for a cumulative score that will count as a test grade.  Study Island is a great way for students to practice math facts and learn more about science topics. They have built in lessons and videos and then students can practice what they have learned.  To log into study island, students will use their student number without the zeros and a dash bhe. For example: 12345-bhe and then the password is bears.

We hope to get to school on Monday morning and  hear the chirping our our little chicks! We should also be able to witness some hatching on Monday during the day.  Thanks again to the Yeary family for providing our eggs and allowing students to witness this miracle!

ELA News

MAP Testing has ended for us in both Math and Reading!!!! I am so very proud of your children and the work they’ve put forth over the course of the school year and the accomplishments made definitely deserved recognition. However, the year is not over! We do still have a lot of work to do and students have yet another opportunity to shine! Here are a few pictures from our ice cream celebration today! Also be on the lookout for certificates! Some students received them for making big gains and exceeding their goals. I have included the breakdown of end-of-year goal scores for 4th grade to help you better understand your child’s number!

High, Average, Low Goal Score for End of Year 4th Grade (Reading)

Field Study to Charleston
Our field trip will be on Wednesday, April 11th.  This is the week after Spring Break.  We will be leaving BHE that morning at 6:30am.  Students need to report to school starting at 6:10am.  Please be on time so that we can leave on time.  We will check in at Liberty Square by 9am and taking the boat over to Ft. Sumter.  We do not want to miss our boat. After our tour of Ft. Sumter is over, we will have a picnic lunch on the aquarium lawn.  (Make sure you bring your lunch from home.) We will tour the aquarium until 2:00 and then board the buses to head home. Our arrival time is set to be about 4:15pm.
