Math News

We finished topic 4 this week and are ready to move on to multiplication.  We will be learning different strategies to multiply multiple digit numbers by one-digit numbers.  We will most likely take the topic 5 test on Wednesday, November 7th. This will be after we are off for Election day, but students will have all the tools to study with and should use that extra time to review for the test.

I sent all graded papers home this past week.  Thank you for quickly returning the papers letting me know you had reviewed them.  I will try and do this about once every two weeks so that you can see your child’s work and not just the grade in PowerSchool.

Don’t forget to check out the Google Classroom “live” calendar.  It is up to date with all tests and/or assignments. Just in case you’re having trouble getting into Google classroom, try this link to see the calendar.

Please  have your students complete at least 5 ALEKS topics each week.  If your child forgets their ALEKS username and password, please let me know.  It is taped in their math journal, but I can look it up and send it by email to you so you can have it too.  I am allowing them to get a maximum of 10 bonus points each week.  This means that they can do 15 topics a week and receive their 5 points for a 100% and then 10 points for extra credit.

Science News

Next week we will be reviewing all of our weather concepts from the entire 1st nine weeks.  I will be giving out a study guide on Monday for students to complete. We will complete and go over in class and review each day.  The Final Weather test will be on Thursday, November 1st. I will also take up Science journals on Friday of next week for a journal grade.  Please encourage your child to study each night for the science test. The information will come from their science textbook and their science journal.

ELA News

READING LOGS
Reading logs are assigned every week. Students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes and then respond to their reading using the question bank provided in their binder for fiction and nonfiction books. Your child is only required to answer one question a night on the reading response sheet provided. Please check weekly - if not every night - to make sure that your child is completing this task.

READING
Next week, we will continue to focus our attention on Main Idea and Theme. The theme is the lesson or message that the writer wants to get across in his or her story that can be applied to our everyday life - we call it THE MEssage (think about how it can be applied to me). As we learn about theme, we will read a few familiar pieces of literature - folktales such as The Ant and the Grasshopper, King Midas and the Golden Touch, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf just to name a few.

Social Studies News
This week students took a social studies assessment on our first major unit - The First Americans (Geography, Land Bridge Theory, and Native American Cultural Groupings). Yes indeed, it did take us a while to get through this unit - but I definitely didn’t want to rush it as it was a lot of information to consume! The following students made it into Ms. A.B.’s A/B Club!

Aubriana's A Club
Bodrick’s B Club

Alijah Wilson
