Math News

We have worked really hard this week learning many different strategies to help with multi-digit multiplication.  We have multiplied 2-, 3-, and 4-digit numbers by a 1-digit number. Ask your child what their favorite strategy is and see if they can show you how to multiply.  We will take the Topic 6 test next Friday, december 7th.

Please continue to encourage your child to complete their ALEKS topics each week.  This is a great way to get up to 10 extra credit points each week.

Science News

We have been observing the moon for the last couple of weeks.  Students were given their moon log on Wednesday, November 14th.  I have also included it in Google classroom with the link to see the moon if it is cloudy or not out when students go to bed.  They are required to observe the moon each night for 28 days so that they may see the moon make one complete cycle. Please remind them to do this everyday and not wait until the last week to just copy them off of the internet.  They will learn so much more if they go out searching each night or morning for the moon. It is a great activity for families to take some time and look at all the amazing things in the night sky. They should have seen the moon go from full moon and how it starts to get smaller now.  By the middle of next week, it will be a New Moon and students will not see the moon at all for a couple of nights.

This week we have researched astronomy tools that help in navigation.  Students defined the instrument, found a picture of it, and told of its importance in navigation.  They even wrote a letter to the editor (in their journals) that was to give the editor great reasons why these instruments are so important in navigation and why we should continue learning of them in school.

Next week we will move onto the Earth’s rotation and how it causes day and night.  We will also start discussing shadows in relation to the sun.
